Good Food to Fight Migraine by Hilda Cherry Hills (£54.00)Publisher: Roberts Publications — 1979Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0906185092]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Small mark to the upper wrap. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the introduction: “Since one in every five families throughout the world will have an inherited migraine problem which will be most probably related to a family history of asthma, hay fever, eczema, epilepsy, coeliac disease, urticaria, schizophrenia — all of which can be related to food sensitivity, one can only feel the deepest gratitude to Mrs. Cherry Hills for her authoritative expertise in producing such an invaluable guide to happy eating for the vast numbers of migraine sufferers. Her book represents a unique and historical contribution to the alleviation of migraine attacks for those millions of victims who have the determination and pain-induced motivation to seek a simple and commonsense means of reducing their episodes of agonising prostration which so few employers, partners or relatives even begin to understand. Modern science, it seems, is quite unable at this stage to guarantee the control of every devastating migraine attack, but the simple observation of Mrs. Hills’s suggestions in this excellent treatise will add years of attack-free days for all who follow her inspired advice.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by P. H.M.S. Electra as Told to A. V. Sellwood by T. J. Cain (£43.00)Publisher: London: Frederick Muller Limited — 1960Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with damp wrinkling to both panels and a short, closed, tear to the head of the upper panel. Price Clipped. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Leans slightly. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: 2nd impression. [First Edition: 1959] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “The only time that H. M. S. Electra got a wartime “mention” in the national press was when three-quarters of her crew were no longer able to read it. They were dead.

For it was the disastrous yet little-known Battle of the Java Sea — where a British, Australian, American and Dutch force was annihilated by the Japanese — that put Electron’s name in print.

‘H. M. S. Electra attacked through the smoke and was seen no more…’

The epitaph was terse, though moving. It left much unsaid. And today, in H. M. S. Electra, Lieutenant-Commander T. J. Cain — who fired her torpedoes during her last desperate battle — does much to do justice, long belated, to both the ship and the company who served her.

The result is sensational. For Cain’s story, prepared with the aid of author and naval correspondent A. V. Sellwood, reveals that the “unknown” Electra was the un-publicised companion-in-battle of some of the best-known names in the Royal Navy, and was the witness of events that shook the world. The sinking of the Athenia, the Ark Royal’s attacks on the Nazis in Norway, the first Russian convoy, the defence of Singapore — wherever there was trouble Electra was sure to be found.

SHE was the unnamed destroyer that sailed with Hood to find the Bismarck, and picked up the former’s three survivors…

SHE was at the sinking of the Repulse and Prince of Wales, and snatched part of their crews to safety beneath the mammoth Jap air attack…

And SHE was destroyed during a lone torpedo onslaught against an entire Japanese fleet, to cover the disabled Exeter, famous veteran of the River Plate.

H. M. S. Electra is not “just a war-story” — it is also a history. But it is a very human history — history as seen by a man who helped to make it.

Lieut. -Commander Cain, who, after a fantastic escape in a U. S. submarine, was later captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of the Japanese, is pungent in his comments regarding the blunders of the time. But equally he is an enthusiast — for Electra, her officers, and the men who made her what he calls: A happy ship — the finest I have ever known.”

The Blitz Then and Now Volume 1: September 3, 1939 to September 6, 1940 by Edited By Winston G. Ramsey (£40.00)Publisher: London: Battle of Britain Prints International — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0900913452]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Diagrams; Maps; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Volume 1 of a trilogy spanning the air war on Britain, The Blitz Then and Now, this book covers the first year, the period from phoney war to total war: September 3, 1939 to September 6, 1940. Beginning with endless air raid warnings and a sense of unreality, it was a phase which was to culminate in Hitler threatening to raze Britain’s cities to the ground.

As a direct source of the day-to-day effects of Luftwaffe operations over Britain at the time, the book utilises extracts from the 24-hour log compiled by the Ministry of Home Security, and this provides a contemporary diary of events as they affected the Home Front. These entries ideally form the setting for a detailed record of the losses sustained by the Luftwaffe over Britain and within sight of land: a barometer of the air war, showing clearly the changing climate of hostilities. Until the summer of 1940 these were mainly reconnaissance flights and attacks on shipping, which gathered pace after Dunkirk as the air attack on Britain and the Royal Air Force escalated through its several stages as a prelude to invasion. Every German crash on land is listed with its crew, and footnotes are included on all those which are known to have been investigated or excavated since the end of the war, together with photographs of some of the more interesting discoveries.

Features and special articles by historians and eyewitnesses intersperse the daily happenings, illustrating life at the time on both the civilian and service fronts, and contrasting descriptions by German airmen give us an insight into just what it was like to be on the other side.

Even now, within a single generation, it seems another world… a part of history… yet the link with the present day is depicted by the comparison ‘then and now’ photographs which are a central feature of all After the Battle publications.

For its unique photographic coverage, and its contribution to the literature of the period, this book is likely to serve as an incomparable record in the years to come.”

Crime Or Disease? by Antony Flew (£23.00)Publisher: London: Macmillan — 1973Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0333114094]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier tanning to the spine. Edges of the textblock heavily tanned. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. The pages are somewhat tanned, if tight, and a little musty. Description: From the cover: “Professor Flew here attacks the present gross over-extensions of the notion of mental disease on both sides of the Atlantic. He defends human dignity and responsibility against the suggestion that we are all, or most of us, ‘sick, sick, sick’. In particular, he challenges the paternalist pretensions of those who claim a right to push and manipulate people because these people are allegedly sick, and so irresponsible.

A key idea of this book is that, in a typical ordinary disease, it is the patient who complains of the disease rather than someone else who complains about the patient. Taking this as a paradigm, it is preposterous, Flew contends, to say that most homosexuals, for instance, are mentally ill. If an analogy with physical disease is to be the basis for urging that mental disease be similarly excused, this basic supposed analogy must not be forgotten when attempts are made to elucidate the concept of mental disease.

This may seem obvious, but the author is able to cite plentiful evidence to show that many who should know better get into great, and even dangerous, muddles over the nature of mental disease — and this through their failure to consider how what they propose to call mental disease does, and does not, resemble syphilis, measles, etc.

Flew seeks in this study to complement the work of Dr Thomas Szasz, looking as a philosopher at problems which Szasz discusses as a psychiatrist. Part I (Survey of the Logical Geography ) is of particular interest to students of philosophy and politics in that it relates modern discussion of the problem to the Plato of The Republic. It also takes note in this context of Samuel Butler’s Erewhon. The book will also be of direct relevance to students of Social Science (including penology), Social Administration, Philosophy of Education and Psychiatry.”

The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents by David Beaty (£19.00)Publisher: London: The Scientific Book Club — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. Bruised at the tail of the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned with heavier offset to the endpapers. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [2]; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Although considerable progress has been made in increasing the reliability of airplanes, very little has been accomplished in reducing the element of human error in aircraft accidents.

So said the first International Civil Aviation Organisation’s first volume of accident reports seventeen years ago. But in the interim the view that human error accidents are inevitable has prevailed. It is this view that David Beaty attacks in The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents. Investigating into an almost totally unexplored area, he has related aircraft accidents to known psychological concepts of fatigue, perception, laterality, conflict, frustration, learning and decision-taking.

This book takes a cool scientific look at the whole problem. Not at all sensational, but none the less of exciting interest, it tells the stories of aircraft accidents and interprets them in psychological terms. And at the same time, it suggests the prospect that, if psychological factors were properly investigated and better understood, a considerable cut would be effected in the now, rising aircraft accident rate.”

Learning to Glow: A Nuclear Reader by Edited by John Bradley (£13.00)Publisher: University of Arizona Press — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0816519560]Condition: Good+. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “Atomic energy has been cloaked in secrecy by government, industry, and the military, but for many Americans the effects of radiation have been less than secret. Just ask the radium workers in Ottawa, Illinois, the “downwinders” of Utah, or unsuspecting veterans of the Gulf War. When told from the perspective of ordinary people, nuclear history takes on a much different tone from that of the tranquil voices of authority who always told us we had nothing to fear. In Learning to Glow, writers such as Scott Russell Sanders, Terry Tempest Williams, and Barbara Kingsolver reveal the psychic and emotional fallout of the Cold War and of subsequent developments in nuclear science. Here are stories of and by ordinary people who have suffered the consequences of the decisions made by those in power — stories that will challenge readers to re-examine their preconceptions about the way we deal with issues of nuclear arms and radioactive waste.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 317 pages. Born in the reign of Queen Victoria, all have lived as adults through the Depression, the Second World War and the Millennium. But for these men, the Great War was the defining period of their lives. Some of them, mere boys at the outbreak, lied about their ages to join up. They saw action in the trenches, at sea and in the fledgling air services.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". In the war’s early days, when the colonial French were struggling to maintain their sovereignty against the Vietminh, terrorist attacks became commonplace; the French Deuxieme Bureau retaliated with brutal interrogation methods and increasingly repressive policies. CIA operations on this volatile Cold-War front began soon after World War II and expanded steadily for decades. After the 1954 withdrawal of the French, Vietnam was polarized by its division into a communist North and a ‘non-communist’ South, ruled by a series of despots whose tenuous grasp on power was maintained only by massive US assistance, first financial, then military as well. It was, indeed, a covert war, some of whose operations are only now coming to light.”Notes: Size: 12" x 9¼. Black boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 192 pages. Coming Out of the Kitchen: Women Beyond the Home by Una A. Robertson (£11.50)Publisher: Sutton Publishing — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Slight ruffling at the head of the spine to the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Until relatively recently it was generally assumed that marriage was the only career for a woman, after which she was confined to the home, immersed in her domestic duties. Achievement in all spheres was, it was supposed, the preserve of men only. In fact, as this new book clearly reveals, there were numerous women who, with minimal education, little financial independence and only basic domestic skills, pursued active and highly successful roles in the world outside the home. Well illustrated and beautifully presented, Coming Out of the Kitchen is the perfect celebration of three centuries of women's achievement, redressing the balance with more traditional history and scuppering for good the notion that the role of women began and ended with marriage. It will be essential reading for women, and men, everywhere.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Red boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 216 pages. Human Nature: Fact and Fiction by Edited by Robin Headlam Wells & Johnjoe McFadden (£11.50)Publisher: Continuum — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0826485464]Condition: Near Fine.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “What do we mean by ‘human nature’? Is there a genetically determined core of humanity that unites us all as members of a single species? Or is the thing we call human nature a social construct? And how do we explain the mystery of human creativity? Do great writers have an intuitive grasp of what makes human beings tick, or are they merely the mouthpiece of contemporary culture? It has been claimed that ‘the greatest enterprise of the mind has always been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and humanities’ (Edward O. Wilson). This ground-breaking book marks the beginning of a new dialogue between the two. Rather than focusing on the division between what C.P. Snow called ‘the two cultures’, it shows that the sciences and humanities have much to learn from each other. Points of disagreement remain. Yet there is in this volume a genuine attempt to bridge the gulf that has traditionally separated the sciences and humanities and to reach a better understanding of what it means to be human. Human Nature — Fact and Fiction is a major new contribution to the debate on human nature, set to be required reading for anyone with a background in either the arts or the sciences who is interested in understanding what defines us as human beings — in what we are, and why.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by A. Man Eaters by Michael Bright (£11.50)Publisher: Robson Books — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861053215]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper.Description: From the cover: “The thought of being eaten alive by a wild animal naturally fills us with horror but this is not a new feeling. While our earliest primate anthropoid ancestors were plucking the odd insect from the trees, the evidence of skulls bearing teeth puncture marks reveals that they themselves were being snatched by fierce predators. Human ‘intelligence’ generally keeps us safe but if you strip away our sophisticated technology, man becomes a weak and defenceless being, an easy target for powerful predators. However, the fact remains that wild animals are curiously wary of people, and under normal circumstances avoid us. So what turns an animal to man-eating? Michael Bright’s fascinating and scrupulously researched book gathers together a range of accounts from around the world to address this intriguing question. Examining the horrifying cases of wolves snatching children in India, or gruesome reports of man-eating sharks and crocodiles, it is easy to imagine that these animals merely enjoy the taste of human flesh. However, we are reminded that there are a variety of possible motives for these attacks, from the obvious one of self-defence, to reasons of old-age or injury, mistaken identity and the fact that predators are losing their natural living space as the world continues to develop. There is an underlying fascination and terror for animals that have the potential to eat us. This global investigation by one of the country’s leading natural history experts provides compelling reading matter, and raises pertinent questions concerning the natural world and our place within it.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Roseanne: My Lives by Roseanne Arnold (£11.50)Publisher: Century — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0712661921]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “In her explosive new book, top-rated TV star Roseanne Arnold once again breaks the mould and does the unexpected. The woman who’s seen it all — and done most of it — tells the unvarnished, uncensored truth about what has happened to her since ‘Roseanne’ became a hit. But success in Hollywood comes with a high price tag and Roseanne reveals the battles she has had to keep her own material on the show and make ‘Roseanne’ a programme about a three-dimensional woman in control of her life, not a victim of it.

Roseanne talks unflinchingly about the painful side of being herself: dealing with her family, her past, drugs and attacks in the press. She talks frankly about her personal life and her relationship with her soul mate, Tom Arnold.

This is a raw, raunchy and powerful memoir from a woman who has created the life she wanted without much help from anybody. She’s written the book that no star at the top ever dares write: she blows the lid off what it’s like to make it in Hollywood from the unique perspective of being a powerful player herself.

Quintessentialy Roseanne.”

The £ s. d. of Retirement by Cecil Chisholm (£11.50)Publisher: Phoenix House — 1957Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with several short, closed, tears to both edges. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Inflation has made retirement a problem. Today the £, of 1946 is worth only 12/6. Can one afford to retire with money falling in value every day? Yes, says Cecil Chisholm, authority on retirement. (His best best-seller.Retire and Enjoy It, sold 20,000 copies.)

Chisholm attacks the problem from both its aspects with equal vigour. First come ways to raise your money resources to the limit before retiring. Next you find the most ingenious ways of making every pound go further after retiring.

Which type of investment will best offset inflation? The relative merits of savings certificates, building societies, gilt-edged, unit trusts and investment trusts are all detailed. Each is tested for its ability (a) to build up the biggest possible fund before retirement; (b) to hedge against inflation. None of your difficulties is dodged. For instance, Chisholm plumps for permanent investment trusts for certain small investors, but chooses unit trusts for others, always giving his proofs. As an ex-City editor he knows the facts.

The author gives as much space and attention to spending as tosaving. ‘Budget your expenditure’ and so save on both housekeeping and casual expenditure, says Chisholm. Himself a retiree, he has done a lot of research on household budgets. An appendix gives ten real-life budgets, ranging from £350 to £1,250 rate p.a. Each of these budgets worked: each is analysed to show how every pound has been made to go as far as possible.

This book is a complete and indispensable guide to the money side of retirement and he explains both ‘why’ and ‘how’ in detail. ‘The book is really an inspiration’, said the New Statesman of his previous volume; and The £ s. d. of Retirement is no less. For younger people it is even more. It is an authoritative guide to saving and investment. And it is the first and sole First Aid against cost of living and inflation. Its purchase will save any reader of any age many pounds.”

Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years by Martin Gilbert (£11.50)Publisher: Macmillan — 1981Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0333325648]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Heavily faded at the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “This is the story — published in association with the ITV series of the same name — of the ten remarkable years up to the Second World War during which Churchill remained alone and abused in the political wilderness.

In 1928 Churchill was at the height of his career. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer and when he spoke in the House of Commons MPs of every party flocked to hear his oratory. The leadership of the all-powerful Conservative party seemed within his grasp. A year later, however, all had changed. The Conservatives themselves were defeated, and out of office Churchill found himself at odds with the leadership, especially over the future of India. When the National Government was formed in 1931 Churchill was not asked to join it.

Thereafter, though out on his own, Churchill’s acute political sense, foresight and courage were undiminished. Fed with secret inside information by a small, brave band of men — some of them risking their careers to help him -Churchill consistently warned of the Nazi danger, even before the rise of Hitler. And once Hitler came to power, he stepped up his attacks on Britain’s failure to rearm. His message was belittled by the Government, which fought him at every turn, even refusing him the right to broadcast. But Churchill never gave up. Despite all the Government’s efforts, and as a result of Churchill’s courage and perseverance, the British public came to realize the truth of his warnings; the bond was formed that was to be so vital in the years that followed, when Britain and Churchill stood together but alone.”

D-Day: Piercing the Atlantic Wall by Robert J. Kershaw (£10.50)Publisher: Ian Allan — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0711021767]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “D-Day is a brilliant collection of German and Allied eyewitness accounts of what it was really like to parachute by night into Normandy, to defend the beaches from within the German bunker, to splash fearfully ashore under machine-gun and artillery fire, to be a victim of the relentless Allied air attacks or to struggle from a burning tank brewed-up by the deadly 88s.

Many books have been written about the Normandy landings, but Robert J Kershaw brings a new perspective by drawing heavily on German and Allied sources little used in the standard accounts. The actual landings and the subsequent few days of battle to consolidate them often resolved themselves into a multitude of desperate small-scale struggles — for the next few yards of beach, to cross the next field, or to reach the next hedgerow. By looking at the battles at precisely this level, Robert Kershaw is able to develop new insights into the failures and successes of both sides, and to show why the battle for Normandy developed into the long and bitter struggle that has become so well known.

He features extracts from the German telephone log for Omaha Beach, bringing the landings to life. He analyses the failure by both sides appropriately to balance tank and infantry forces in the difficult Normandy terrain, and examines why the Allies, with local superiority in the early days, were unable to break out earlier, or form a larger bridgehead.

He shows how the D-Day struggle was not concluded in a single ‘longest’ day but was in fact a 10-day battle for the Normandy foreshore to decide whether the Allied lodgement would hold, or the Germans push the invaders into the sea.”

From the cover: “It is not only the UK education system which has recently undergone a process of change, although it has certainly been one of the most dramatically affected. Free market conceptions have played their part in these changes, particularly throughout the European Union. This collection focuses on the economic and social contexts for education both in the UK and internationally and how these have had an impact on the education systems of different countries.

The authors write from a wide range of standpoints, some supportive and some critical of the new paradigms, but all focus on the traditions which have been subjected to ideological attacks and the processes and outcomes of those attacks.

This reader will be useful to all those studying or interested in education policy, especially within the context of the European Union.”

London 1945: Life in the Debris of War by Maureen Waller (£10.50)Publisher: London: John Murray — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd impression. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “London at the outset of war in 1939 was the greatest city in the world, the heart of the British Empire. By 1945 it was a drab and exhausted city, beginning the long haul back to recovery.

The defiant capital had always been Hitler’s prime target. The last months of the war saw the final phase of the battle of London as the enemy unleashed its new vengeance weapons, the flying bombs and rockets. They were terrifying and brought destruction on a vast scale, but fortunately came too late to dent morale seriously.

The people of London were showing the spirit, courage and resilience which had earned them the admiration of the world during a long siege. In the harshest winter for fifty years, they were living in primitive conditions. Thousands were homeless, living in the Underground and deep shelters. Women queued for horse meat and were lucky to obtain one egg a month. They besieged emergency coal dumps. Everyone longed for peace.

The bright new world seemed elusive. As the victory celebrations passed into memory, there were severe hardships and all the problems of post-war adjustment. Women lost the independence the war had lent them, husbands and wives had to learn to live together again, and children had a lot of catching up to do.

Yet London’s loss has often been its opportunity. Its people had eagerly embraced plans for a modern metropolis and an end to poverty. They voted overwhelmingly for a Labour government and the new, fairer, social order that was their reward for all they had endured.

The year of victory, 1945, represents an important chapter in London’s — and Britain’s — long history. Acclaimed historian Maureen Waller draws on a rich array of primary sources, letting the people tell their own story, to re-create that moment, bringing to it the social insight at which she excels.”

Seize and Hold: Master Strokes on the Battlefield by Bryan Perrett (£10.50)Publisher: Arms & Armour — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1854091875]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; From the cover: “Napoleon said that the success of the coup de main depended absolutely upon luck rather than upon judgement. This must rank as one of his less considered comments: as this book makes plain, the military tactic of the sudden acquisition of a strategic objective can be — should be — clinically designed and ruthlessly attempted however hurried its conception.

In the style of his hugely successful volumes Last Stand! and At All Costs!, Bryan Perrett now examines in accurate detail and exciting, atmospheric description, eleven examples of this battlefield manoeuvre which has often had telling effect on the campaign of which it has been part. From central Europe in 1916 through the theatres of World War Two and Korea to the Vietnam conflict in 1965, each example portrays the many facets and dramas of land warfare, causing the reader to question whether the events are real, faithful accounts of actual happenings and not the creation of a Hollywood scriptwriter.

If the Trojan Horse was an early example of a coup and the advanced air/land weaponry of today means that the tactic will be viewed in a new light in the future, the fact remains that the 20th century has given us outstanding Seize and Hold actions. Military historians, veterans and serving officers, modellers and wargamers will all be entertained and informed by the stories retold here, but the reader of adventure fiction, too, will thrill to the breathtaking attacks in Romania, on the road to Beda Fomm, in Burma and at the Inchon landings among many daring exploits recounted within the pages of this book.”

To the Ends of the Earth: The Hunt for the Jackal by David A. Yallop (£10.50)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0224023683]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned.Description: Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “ON FRIDAY 27 JUNE 1975 a young Venezuelan burst from a Paris apartment straight into the world’s headlines.

He left for dead four men. He had previously blithely lobbed a grenade into a crowded cafe, attempted to assassinate the President of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain, seized the French Embassy in Holland, and launched two rocket attacks on planes at Orly airport. His crimes were apparently endless. He went on to kidnap the OPEC ministers in Vienna.

He is known to the world as Carlos. The press dubbed him The Jackal. Security forces consider him The World’s Most Wanted Man.

David Yallop tracked Carlos down to a small village in the Bekaa Valley outside war torn Beirut. Through two long nights he listened to part of Carlos’s story.

Then, under tragic circumstances, the trail went dead.

For the next seven years, Yallop tried to rediscover Carlos the Jackal, but what began as a manhunt became a journey into the frightening world of terrorism, espionage and Middle Eastern politics before he finally succeeded. Yallop found out that for years the American and French governments have both been penetrated by Arab intelligence, and that major international airlines paid millions of dollars in protection money to a Palestinian terror group. He uncovered information that could and should have averted the Lockerbie disaster, and — perhaps most terrifying of all — he learned the reason for the massacre of thousands of Palestinians in the refugee camps of Sabra and Chatila.

Drawing on the investigative skills that made In God’s Name an international bestseller, written with clarity, passion and humanity, To the Ends of the Earth — The Hunt for the Jackal is a monumental and riveting book, a pursuit of truth that is destined to become a classic.”

Against the Grain by Boris Yeltsin (£9.50)Publisher: Simon & Schuster — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0671700553]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “Seldom has a man so close to the centre of power written so openly about his country, his society, and its leaders. But Boris Yeltsin is not cut from the mould of typical politicians — and especially not of typical Soviet politicians. Yeltsin’s outspoken criticism of the inadequacies of perestroika and of Mikhail Gorbachev has received international attention. His attacks have been so vehement and relentless that, in 1987, Gorbachev had him removed from the Politburo and the Party. But Yeltsin’s dismissal only added to his popularity, and in 1989, he was elected as a delegate to the People’s Parliament by a staggering 89 percent of the electorate. Against the Grain is the exhilarating story of Boris Yeltsin’s rise and fall— and rise again — and of his unending battle to improve the quality of life for his people.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". I Have Landed: Splashes and Reflections in Natural History by Stephen Jay Gould (£9.50)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0224062999]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Description: A Later Printing. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “Described by the Sunday Times as ‘the greatest living scientist’, Stephen Jay Gould’s writing remains the modern standard by which popular science writing is judged. Ever since the mid-1970s, his monthly essay in Natural History — ‘written without a single interruption for cancer, hell, high water, or the World Series’ — and his full-length books have bridged the yawning gap between science and wider culture.

Throughout his work Gould has developed a distinctive and personal form of essay to treat great scientific issues in the context of biography. In this fascinating collection, his tenth and last volume of essays from Natural History, Gould has once again applied biographical perspectives to the illumination of key scientific concepts and their history, ranging from the discovery of the new scourge of syphilis by Fracastero in the sixteenth century and Isabelle Duncan’s nineteenth-century attempt at reconciling scripture and palaeontology to Freud’s weird speculations about human phylogeny and recent creationist attacks on the study of evolution. As always the essays brilliantly illuminate and elucidate the puzzles and paradoxes great and small that have fuelled the enterprise of science and opened our eyes to a world of unexpected wonders.”

Kamikaze: Japan's Suicide Samurai by Raymond Lamont-Brown (£9.50)Publisher: Arms & Armour — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1854093673]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Out of the sun they came. Through a torrent of fire from anti-aircraft gun crews they hurtled relentlessly towards their targets. Their intention was the maiming or destruction of the vessel ahead at the price of certain death amongst searing flame and twisted metal. They were Emperor Hirohito’s ‘suicide samurai’, Japan’s last response to a war that was turning against them.

Kamikaze is an emotive word which has entered English language dictionaries to describe an unthinking, manic suicide act, but it was not so amongst ardently patriotic Japanese. It was not a blind, insane action on their part; those who undertook such missions were to be elevated to the status of gods; their flights were not futile gestures to them, but determined strategies which demonstrated a greater resolve than the enemy.

Japanese traditional tales talk of a ‘Divine Wind’ — a Kami Kaze — sent by the great Goddess of the Sun, Amaterasu Omikami, to destroy the mighty fleets of the Mongol ruler, Kublai Khan, in the 13th century. Almost seven centuries later the people of Japan petitioned another Divine Wind to defeat a powerful enemy fast approaching the motherland. So the young Kamikaze pilots were to resort to history and replicate the ancient stories by sacrificing their lives for their Emperor and country in suicide attacks on Allied shipping.

Here, Japanologist and historian Raymond Lamont-Brown delves beneath the actual events to uncover the psychology, myth and reality of Kamikaze strategy, training and execution. He uses original Japanese records and personal testimonies to describe the organisation and operation of the Kamikaze on land, sea and in the air. The reader will gain an unprecedented understanding of the mentality of the tactic and those who carried it out and of the impact it had on the Allied war effort.”

Portents of the Real: A Primer For Post-9/11 America by Susan Willis (£9.50)Publisher: Verso — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844670236]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “The shock and horror that gripped America on September 11, 2001, has given way to a culture of pathological worry. Ignited by the terrorist attacks, anxiety has been fueled by the nation’s official response, which sanctioned a narrative of good vs. evil, the suppression of intellectual debate and the political expediency of keeping the citizenry in a constant state of fear. Snipers in the capital, the government in bunkers, flag euphoria and anthrax hysteria, torture in Abu Ghraib and a stuntman who survived Niagara Falls -these are the nation’s portents, signs of the times in post-9/11 America. Portents of the Real examines culture to apprehend the foreboding political subtexts of a nation perpetually at war on terror.

Against an ever-deepening climate of political repression and a journalistic landscape dominated by sensationalized controversy and historical forgetfulness, Susan Willis offers an astute analysis of the realities behind America’s cultural myths. The effect is both wry and unnerving.”

From the cover: “THIS introduction to the study of the senses of animals is aimed at senior pupils in the schools and university students, and it will also be of great interest and value to field-naturalists, particularly those who incline more towards zoology than towards botany. The book is divided into two sections. The first deals with animal senses in a general way, and also with those observations in the field that can show how the creatures concerned use their senses under differing conditions. The second section describes how the various senses work and also deals with their nervous structures and physiology. The authors have endeavoured to keep technicalities down to a reasonable minimum, believing as they do that too much jargon can confuse rather than assist the student.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½".
