Letters to a young gymnast by Nadia Comaneci (£18.00)Publisher: New York: Basic Books — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0465012760]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Description: From the cover: “ If there were such a thing as an elder stateswoman in women’s gymnastics today, Nadia Comaneci would win that title as readily as she once won gold medals. Olga Korbut came before her, and many other medalists would follow, but none has ever been as dominant in winning the hearts of millions around the world. With grit and determination, Nadia Comaneci ushered in a new era for women’s sports, one where young girls could vault into the arena of super-stardom. Even today, almost thirty years after her greatest triumphs, you need only mention the word “Nadia” and gymnastics fans know instantly whom you are talking about.

In Letters to A Young Gymnast, Nadia shows us what it takes to achieve these heights. With inspiring and dramatic stories from her own experience, she tells us how the young girl that Bela Karolyi discovered in a Romanian elementary school found the inner strength to become a world-class athlete at such a young age. Now a woman of tremendous poise and self-assurance, Nadia offers up unique insights into the mind of a top competitor. From how to live on after you’ve realized your dream, to the necessity of a spirit forged with mettle, Nadia’s thoughts on athleticism and sacrifice are eye-opening and surprisingly challenging.”

Great Sporting Moments by Ian Harrison (£16.50)Publisher: Cassell — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844032825]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Great Sporting Moments packs over ninety of the greatest moments from almost a century of sport into one incredible sporting year. This exciting book takes you month by month through the sporting calendar to relive the most dramatic, the most triumphant, the most poignant and the most significant sporting milestones in more than twenty different sports — January 1973, Gareth Edwards scores ‘the try of the century’; 1984, Torvill & Dean wow the world with their Bolero; April 1981, Aldaniti and Bob Champion win the Grand National; September 2001, the England football team beats Germany 5-1; November 2003, England wins the Rugby Union World Cup.

The moments in this book range from team triumphs (England’s near-mythical win in the 1966 Football World Cup and the counterpart Rugby Union victory in 2003) to personal achievements (Nadia Comaneci’s perfect 10) and from victories against the odds (Cassius Clay v Sonny Listen) to the sheer drama of last-minute finishes (Dennis Taylor’s black ball finish). Here you will find triumph, tears, human drama, national pride, and from the mosaic of individual moments, a picture emerges of the world’s great sporting events — the Olympic Games; the football, cricket and rugby union World Cups; the Grand National, the FA Cup, the Wimbledon Championships.

Great Sporting Moments is a book for sports aficionados and casual fans alike — a nostalgic reminder for those who simply want to relive the moments; packed with details and fascinating facts for those who want to know more about these famous events. Fred Perry was the last British player to win Wimbledon but who did he beat in the final? Why is the marathon such an odd length? Who played in the White Horse final and what was the score?”

A History of Greece to the Death of Alexander the Great by J. B. Bury; Rusell Meiggs; (£14.00)Publisher: MacMillan — 1977Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0333154932]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Notably rubbed at the outside edges of the cover and spine with fading to both wrappers. Leans. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint of the 4th Edition. [First: 1900] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The first edition of Bury’s famous book was published in 1900, on the eve of Sir Arthur Evans’s dramatic excavations at Cnossus. In the second edition (1913) Bury rewrote the first chapter in the light of the evidence from Crete. In the third edition (1951), prepared by Russell Meiggs, the progress of archaeology again demanded a rewriting of much of the first chapter, and changes were made in other chapters. By the early 1970s, however, so much new material had accumulated that it was decided to prepare a fourth edition. The publishers are fortunate to have been able to call again on Russell Meiggs. This revision (1975) is more complete than the last. However, although Bury’s text has been widely changed in the light of new work and the further sifting of evidence, great care has been taken to preserve the basic character of the original; in particular, no change has been made in the scale and emphasis of Bury’s History. The revised text is presented in a modern format. The original maps have been redrawn and new ones added, with the inclusion of a fold-out map at the end of the book. The illustrations have been revised and improved and the section of notes has been enlarged, with the addition of useful bibliographies.”Notes: Size: 9¾" x 7¼". 577 pages. The Wisden Book of Obituaries: Obituaries From Wisden Cricketers' Almanack by Compiled by Benny Green (£14.00)Publisher: Macdonald Queen Anne Press — 1988Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 9780356106403]Condition: Very Good. Gently bruised at head & tail of spine and corners. Edges of the textblock very lightly soiled.Description: From the introduction: “The cricketers of England and her dominions have come from every walk of life, pursued every kind of path, embraced every sort of morality or no morality at all, and experienced every kind of death. They passed away in every imaginable way and one or two others besides. Being dedicated athletes every one, several of them died in mid-stroke. They took their leave while playing polo, squash, lawn tennis, golf, football, rowing, hunting, shooting, fishing, cycling, refereeing and umpiring. There is even one case recorded of death while bird-watching. Some of the very lucky ones died at the crease, like Andrew Ducat, or in the field, or even occasionally in the pavilion, like the gentleman to be found in these pages who “died in his flannels in the Bristol pavilion”. At least one old cricketer would perhaps have wished to die at the ground but never quite mastered the timing; we read A. W. Sheldon, who passed away while packing his bag for the Scarborough Festival.”Notes: Size: 9" x 5½". Pictorial boards. 1029 pages.
