An Ageing Population: A Reader and Sourcebook by Edited by Vida Carver & Penny Liddiard (£56.50)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1978Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0340233737]Condition: Very Good. Gently faded at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “At the beginning of this century, approximately seven per cent of the population was aged sixty or more. Today, the proportion is twenty per cent and is likely to rise still further, bringing with it an increased demand for the provision of services for the elderly, and placing new emphasis on the problems — personal, social, medical, economic — associated with old age. An Ageing Population examines these problems and the ways in which they affect the elderly individual, his family, the caring professional and the community as a whole. The papers in this book have been drawn from a variety of sources to provide a broad perspective on the needs and circumstances of the elderly. Thus extracts from the literature of sociology, psychology, medicine, social work and nursing appear side by side with personal accounts of ageing, disability and the activities of voluntary workers. Together, they reinforce the view that the problems and challenges associated with longevity require a community response matched with inter-professional understanding and cooperation. An Ageing Population, a set book for the Open University post-experience course of the same title (P252), will be invaluable to all those professionally responsible for the care of the elderly, as well as the concerned general reader.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 434 pages. Abandoned Mansions of Ireland by Tarquin Blake (£42.00)Publisher: Wilton: The Collins Press — 2012Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9781848890619]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 3rd printing. [First Published: 2010] Illustrated by way of: Glossary; Vignette to the title page; Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “From the mid-eighteenth century Irish country houses flourished. Landowners generated easy income leasing land to tenants. As their wealth increased, so did the size of their country mansions. However, the Great Famine took its toll. Penniless tenants could not pay rent and estate owners found themselves in a precarious financial position. Later land reforms saw land ownership transferred directly to farmers. The houses, stripped of their land and income, fell into decline. During the War of Independence the mansions became an IRA target and many were deliberately burnt. For others, the increasing expense of maintenance made them unviable. Gradually, abandoned and forgotten, they sank into decay.

In 2008 Tarquin Blake found his first abandoned ‘Big House’ and began exploring the lost architecture of Ireland. Here he documents what is left of fifty mansion houses. Included are Mountpelier Lodge (the Dublin Hellfire Club), the birthplaces of Daniel O’Connell and the Duke of Wellington, and the one-time homes of Grace O’Malley and the Smithwicks of Kilkenny (brewers).

Brief histories of the houses and associated folklore tell of troubled times and private hardships. The inclusion of details from the 1911 Census offers a glimpse of the closing days of the aristocracy and their mansions. For example, the census records the owner of Lisheen House in Sligo as a Mr Owen Phibbs; occupation: Landed Proprietor; age 70. Mr Phibbs lived in the twenty-five rooms of his magnificent mansion house accompanied by a staff of five: a cook, parlour maid, housemaid, kitchen maid and laundress. By 1950 Lisheen House would be utterly abandoned. Today the fine carved stonework has almost disappeared under ivy.

The histories, together with beautiful photographs of the haunting ruins, explore a part of our heritage that is crumbling away before our eyes.”

The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". Medieval Sculpture by Roberto Salvini (£31.00)Publisher: London: Michael Joseph — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0718105788]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge dye has run slightly on the first blank and pastedown. Slight and light spotting to the start and finish. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Jacket illustration: Gothic Pieta from Seeon, Bavaria c. 1420-30. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates;

From the cover: “The history of medieval sculpture in Western Europe is often described as a gradual rediscovery of technical skill and naturalism. In this volume, the author approaches his subject from a different angle, tracing the development of sculpture against a background of changing political, social and religious structures and in relation to the growth of written and spoken languages. He demonstrates that a new kind of sculpture, a humble, popular style which developed from Roman provincial sculpture, appeared and existed side by side with courtly styles which preserved or rediscovered much of the dignity of Late Classical art.

As feudalism declined, this dichotomy between the popular and courtly disappeared. The first literary Romance languages took root and regional Romanesque styles developed, identified with religious architecture and sculptors like Gislebertus, Wiligelmo and Antelami.

In the Gothic age, national idioms developed in the figurative arts as France, England and Germany became unified monarchical states. In Italy a national consciousness, on a cultural level, evolved; with it are associated the sculptors of the Pisano family and the cathedrals they decorated in Pisa and Siena.

As the Renaissance flowered in Italy and southern France, the Late Gothic style continued in the north, especially in Germany, where the work of Riemen-schneider and Veil Stoss is outstanding in this period.

This volume, spanning over 1,000 years from the fifth to the fifteenth century, contains a remarkable selection of illustrations which follow closely the historical development and represent the finest examples of Medieval art.”

The Wirral by Alan Brack (£20.50)Publisher: Phillimore & Co. — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0850336791]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First Edition: 1980] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Wirral was already an old-established administrative unit at the time of Domesday Book. This book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, that give the peninsula its individuality. Well known as a writer on the locality, Alan Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived there nearly all his life. His book is at once scholarly, readable and entertaining. He has studiously avoided the highly romanticised view which has persisted in other accounts of the area and his opening chapter, ‘A Place Apart’, sets the tone for the whole book. There are sections on Birkenhead and Wallasey and on Bebington and Bromborough. An authoritative account of the establishment of Ellesmere Port is followed by a chapter on the Urbanised Districts of Hoylake, Neston and Heswall, on the Urbanised, Unexpected and Purpose-built villages, on the open spaces and on crossing the Mersey. The description of Port Sunlight, with its vignette of Lord Leverhulme, is especially well-informed. Human interest relieves a generally topographical approach through the appearance in the local context of the many notable men and women who have been associated with the Wirral.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Aaron Copland and His World by Edited by Carol J. Oja & Judith Tick (£17.00)Publisher: Princeton & Oxford: Princeton University Press — 2005Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9780691124704]Condition: Very Good. Upper wrapper slighty curled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Facsimiles; Musical scores;

From the cover: “Aaron Copland and His World reassesses the legacy of one of America’s best-loved composers at a pivotal moment — as his life and work shift from the realm of personal memory to that of history. This collection of seventeen essays by distinguished scholars of American music explores the stages of cultural change on which Copland’s long life (1900-1990) unfolded: from the modernist experiments of the 1920s, through the progressive populism of the Great Depression and the urgencies of World War II, to post-war political backlash and the rise of serialism in the 1950s and the widespread cultural turbulence of the 1960s.

Continually responding to an ever-changing political and cultural panorama, Copland kept a firm focus on both his private muse and the public he served. No self-absorbed recluse, he was very much a public figure who devoted his career to building support systems that would help composers function pro-ductively in America. This book offers multiple critiques on Copland’s role in these shifting contexts.

The contributors include music historians long associated with Copland scholarship such as Vivian Perlis, Howard Pollack, and Larry Starr, as well as newer voices to Copland, among them Elliott Antokoletz, Leon Botstein, and Martin Brody. The book also gives voice to younger scholars: Emily Abrams, Paul Anderson, Elizabeth Crist, Melissa de Graaf, Neil Lerner, and Beth Levy. And it offers interdisciplinary essays by the dance scholar Lynn Garafola, the art historian Gail Levin, and the cultural historian Morris Dickstein.

The topics range from Copland’s role in shaping an American school of modern dance to his relationship with Leonard Bernstein; his homosexuality, especially as influenced by the writings of Andre Gide; and theoretical explorations of cultural nationalism. Copland’s rich correspondence with the composer and critic Arthur Berger, who set the parameters of Copland’s reception for much of the composer’s lifetime, is published here in its entirety, edited by Wayne Shirley.”

The Oxford Illustrated Literary Guide to Great Britain and Ireland by Compiled & edited by Dorothy Eagle & Hilary Carnell (£16.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1981Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0198691254]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “This reference book is a companion to the literary associations of places from Abbotsford (Sir Walter Scott’s house in the Scottish border country) to Zennor (the Cornish village where D. H. Lawrence and his wife lived in 1916 and 1917). Buildings of all kinds, including some that must be forlornly described as ‘gone’, as well as towns, villages, and districts, are included, and there are cross-references for fictitious names of real places. When the first edition was published in 1977 Robert Nye described it in the Scotsman as ‘a lovely book in which to dip and dream’, a sentiment shared by reviewers and readers all over the world. Many people have written to the editors with suggestions for places or authors to be included, and many have regretted the absence of illustrations.

This new, illustrated edition appears in a larger format, with improved maps and much new material. Writers of recent times, like Gavin Maxwell at Sandaig, A. A. Milne in Ashdown Forest, and J. R. R. Tolkien in Birmingham, have been given more space. Living authors are still excluded, but altogether 58 new places and 44 new authors have been added, bringing the total number of entries on places to 1,232 and authors to 913. The illustrations include portraits of writers, pictures of buildings as they are today and of others that have long since disappeared, landscapes connected with writers and their works, one or two libraries, and an occasional detail from a manuscript.

There is a fascination about places associated with writers that has often prompted readers to become pilgrims’, say the authors. This book will help both armchair pilgrims and travellers, as one reviewer of the first edition put it, ‘to wallow unashamedly in a rich nostalgia for what is called our literary heritage’.”

The Illustrated Bede by John Marsden (£14.00)Publisher: MacMillan — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 033347595X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank with a small sticker covering the price on the flap. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains a glossary of terms. Illustrated by way of: Facsimiles; Chronological Tables; Colour Photographs; Maps; Genealogical Tables;

From the cover: “I, Bede, have composed this ecclesiastical history of Britain, and of the English people … using what information I could acquire from ancient documents, from the tradition of my elders, and from my own knowledge.

Thus Bede, writing from his monastery on the Tyne in the early eighth century ad, describes his extraordinary masterwork. The first English history to be written by an Englishman and the incomparable chronicle of Northumbria’s golden age, it has been read for more than twelve hundred and fifty years.

The Illustrated Bede offers specially commissioned new translations from Bede’s historical writings — his Life of Cuthbert and Lives of the Abbots of Wearmouth & Jarrow as well as the great Ecclesiastical History — telling of the land and the people of ‘an island in the Ocean’, of the warlords who forged the Saxon kingdoms, and the abbots and abbesses, hermits and holy men who dominate the dawn of English Christianity

- Aidan of Lindisfarne, Etheldreda of Ely, John of Beverley, Wilfrid of Hexham, the poet Caedmon, and Cuthbert, the hermit bishop who remains the great saint of the north country.

Bede’s writings are splendidly illustrated with full-colour photographs of the wealth of masonry and manuscript surviving from his time and of landscapes that he himself would have recognised.

This new translation, written and researched in Jarrow and County Durham, captures the distinctive flavour of Bede’s Latin, while the location photography evokes all the atmosphere of the historic sites and holy places associated with Bede’s life and writings — from Northumberland’s coastline and countryside to Columba’s isle of lona and the martyr’s shrine at St Albans.”

The detailed and illuminating introductions draw on modern historical and archaeological research to seek out the man himself in his time

  • Teacher, poet, musician, scientist and historian
  • The scholar monk who travelled no further than York and Lindisfarne yet won renown as the most learned man in Europe
  • One of the north country’s greatest sons, still remembered with an affection that has endured for over twelve centuries as the Venerable Bede of Jarrow…

Essex Airfields in the Second World War by Graham Smith (£13.00)Publisher: Countryside Books — 1996Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 185306405X]Condition: Good. Lightly rubbed at the tips of the wrappers. Text complete, clean and tight, but has a slight kink to the entire block. A good reading copy and more. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps [2]; Chapter Headpieces;

From the cover: “Essex has been associated with aviation from the earliest days of flight. During the last war, its proximity to London and to the coast of occupied Europe made it inevitable that it would be in the front line of Britain’s defences.

By the end of the war Essex had no fewer than 23 operational military airfields, all but three of them (Hornchurch, North Weald and Debden) built since 1939. The desperate months endured by ‘The Few’ in the Battle of Britain were followed by the arrival of the USAAF’s ‘mighty’ Eighth Air Force in 1942, and later by groups of the Ninth, in a huge build-up of air power that carried the war across the North Sea into the heart of Germany.

This book describes the history of each airfield — both RAF and USAAF — and highlights the major operations and raids carried out from them. The effects of the war on the daily lives of the people of Essex and the constant dangers they suffered, are also detailed.

Graham Smith’s action-packed book vividly recalls the days and nights when Essex skies echoed to the roar of Hurricanes, Spitfires, Mosquitos, Marauders, Mustangs, Thunderbolts and Flying Fortresses.”

Bruised at the tail of the spine. Price Clipped. Previous owners' inscription to the half-title page. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Born Vera Welch in 1917, Dame Vera Lynn’s career began at just seven years old when she sang professionally in East End Working Men’s Clubs. A successful radio career with Joe Loss and Charlie Kunz in the 1920s and ‘30s followed — but it was with World War II that she became famous.

With her radio show ‘sincere!} Yours’, Vera connected emotionally with the men fighting for their country and those left behind praying for their loved ones, and became known as ‘The Forces’ Sweetheart’. Performing the songs she will forever be associated with — ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’ among others -Vera toured Egypt, India and Burma with the Entertainment National Sen ices Association, bringing the troops a sense of ‘back home’. But what she saw out there affected her profoundly.

Her career after the war flourished, but Vera never left behind her wartime role. Still heavily involved with veteran and other charities, this is Dame Vera’s extraordinary story of her life and her war — from bombs and rations to broadcasts and air raids, and the searing heat of her appearances abroad.”

Historic Houses of Britain by Mark Girouard (£12.50)Publisher: London: Peerage Books — 1984Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. From the cover: “Britain’s country houses are famous all over the world for their architecture, their treasures, and their history. In this lavishly-illustrated book, Mark Girouard — the leading authority on the subject — selects twenty-four historic houses, all open to the public, and brings them vividly to life. He describes how the houses were designed and decorated, and how people lived in them. A fascinating array of characters are associated with each house — kings, crooks, millionaires, royal mistresses, lords of the manor and humble servants. They, as much as the beautiful houses in which they lived, are the subject of this book.

The houses described include royal residences like Hampton Court, aristocratic family homes like Chatsworth and Castle Howard, and National Trust properties like Lacock Abbey and Penrhyn Castle.”

From the preface: “Of all the habitats in Britain in which communities of animals and plants are found, none is richer than the sea shore. This narrow strip, extending for thousands of miles (though covering a relatively small area), is occupied by an astounding variety of life. One of the main reasons for this is that the habitat is divided horizontally into zones which depend primarily upon the frequency and duration of submergence; the effect of the tides largely determines the natural riches of the sea shore. Further, rock, sand and mud provide radically different environments and the sea-shore communities associated with these differ widely from one another.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 6". Both the microscopic and macroscopic viewpoints are presented. The book was written for engineers, and the viewpoint is that of the engineer. Physics is not engineering, but in electrical engineering the demarcation lines are often so blurred as to be meaningless. In such cases, the material presented to engineers and physicists may cover the same ground, but the reasons for doing so and the approaches followed are often quite different. The material presented in this book is a simplified presentation of well known phenomena and theories originally contributed and published by others. The purpose here is to show the broad physical basis supporting the phenomena associated with electrical engineering, to show the position of each subject in its general relation to other subjects."Notes: Size: 8½" x 5¾". The Massachusetts Miracle: High Technology and Economic Revitalization by David Lampe (£11.50)Publisher: MIT Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges with a nick at the foot of the upper panel. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Just 15 years ago, soaring unemployment, staggering state budget overruns, and tough competition from beyond its borders had driven Massachusetts’ aging economy to its knees. Today, the state’s robust high-tech-based economy and its record low unemployment have focused worldwide attention on what has been called a “miraculous” economic revival. The Massachusetts Miracle takes a closer look at this dramatic turnaround as it actually happened, presenting a collection of highly readable, non-scholarly analyses, opinion pieces, and policy statements written by local economists and policymakers over the last decade and a half. In the process, it reveals the inherent difficulties associated with regional economic analysis and planning. Among the critical questions addressed in the book: How much of the recovery occurred as the result of specific programs and policy decisions? What were the prevailing views of economists and policy makers on what the state’s problems were and what the solutions might be? What were the reasons for the region’s ultimate success? And, can the “miracle” be duplicated elsewhere? Arranged chronologically, the chapters document the various key events, policies, and insights that shaped the region’s economic development. Each contribution is placed in context by a brief introduction, and an overview weaves the various threads together into a coherent picture of how the “Massachusetts Miracle” evolved.”Notes: Jacket designed by Judy Filippo. It is for this range of weather, and the associated implications caused by currents, shallow water, poor visibility and crew fatigue, that this illustrated handbook has been created.Notes: Illustrated by Richard Everitt & Peter A. Tradition and Truth: The Challenge of England’s Radical Theologians 1962-1989 by David L. [Lawrence] Edwards (£11.50)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0340514523]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: From the cover: “Is Christianity’s uniqueness among the religions a myth? Is the incarnation of God a myth? Is God himself a myth? What does ‘myth’ mean? These have been among the questions asked by radical theologians in England since the early 1960s, often arousing widespread discussion.

David Edwards, who is now Provost of Southwark Cathedral, has been closely associated with this controversial movement of thought — as its main publisher while he was Editor of the SCM Press and as an independent interpreter and critic. At the end of the 1980s he feels that the time has come to look back and assess. Reprinting some of his reviews but mostly offering fresh reflections, he analyses the origins in Cambridge, the contrasting developments of John Robinson and Don Cupitt, the rejection of traditional doctrines by scholars of the stature of Maurice Wiles and Geoffrey Lampe, the challenges to the authority of the gospels voiced by John Bowden and Dennis Nineham, the new teaching of John Hick and others about Christianity’s equality with other faiths, and the new perceptions of what is now orthodoxy. At the end he prints responses by those criticised, in the hope of deepening thought and dialogue.”

A Book of British Music Festivals by Richard Adams (£10.50)Publisher: Robert Royce — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0947728228]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Price Clipped. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “When one considers the nearly two hundred British festivals covered in this book, the thing that strikes one most forcibly is the richness and variety of their music-making. There are festivals devoted to church music, to early music, to the most radical of contemporary music; festivals of opera and chamber music; festivals that celebrate the English, Scottish or Welsh tradition; festivals for the organ, for choirs, for young people; festivals that have no fixed abode and festivals that are closely associated with particular buildings. And the firmest based are those which demonstrate that passionate commitment — whether it shows itself in the enthusiasm of the amateur who stays up half the night helping erect a platform for a visiting wind ensemble, or the generosity of the professional who waives her fee — in the absence of which the sounds of celebration ring hollow and fade all too quickly. Richard Adams has written a witty and zestful survey of the classical music festival scene in England, Scotland and Wales in the mid-eighties. He includes accounts of all festivals in which music plays a major role — from prestigious international events to modest village festivities, from St Magnus (in the Orkneys) to Notre Dame du Rosaire (in Guernsey). The book is intended as a practical guide for festival addicts and music-loving tourists and is also an evocation of the atmosphere and flavour of the British music festival tradition. There is an introductory chapter on the origins of this tradition and the remainder of the book is divided into sections covering England, Scotland, Wales, London, festivals in churches and cathedrals, organ festivals, youth festivals and specialist festivals. Scattered among these sections there are several ‘private views’ volunteered by well-known musical figures — composers Michael Berkeley, Geoffrey Burgon and Robert Saxton, singers Teresa Cahill and Linda Esther Gray, critic Noel Goodwin, conductor Richard Hickox and violinist Simon Standage. The book includes a festival calendar with contact addresses and telephone numbers, two useful maps, and is profusely illustrated with some thirty colour and fifty black and white photographs.”Notes: Size: 10" x 7". Dustwrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Gently faded at the spine. Leans heavily. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: A Submariner in Fleet Street. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Johnnie Coote joined the Group when all its newspapers were on the commanding peaks of Fleet Street, the mecca of every aspiring journalist, envied and imitated by their rivals. But the leaders of the print unions with their restrictive practices and grossly inflated manning scales were already holding the industry to ransom. He tells how the union leaders refused to see that they were digging their own graves; and of happier encounters with such titans of the Street as John Gordon, Hugh Cudlipp, John Junor, Chapman Pincher, Charles Wintour and the ageing Canadian autocrat who held nearly all the voting shares. The pace of work, and of play was hectic, calling for the stamina ofa team of oxen.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Red boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 156 pages. Gods of the Dawn: The Message of the Pyramids and the 1 Stargate Mystery by Peter Lemesurier (£10.50)Publisher: London: Thorsons — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 072253549X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams;

From the cover: “By combining the cutting edge theories of well-known Egypt experts with his own years of intensive research, Peter Lemesurier has put together an explosive new work that at last presents a unified theory of the pyramids.

In language that is simple, dramatic and to the point he explains the extraordinary mathematics, geography and astronomy behind them and their internal passages and chambers. He uses clearly set out diagrams to demonstrate that the pyramids are a cosmic ‘address’ representing Earth, Mars, Venus and the moon — and that the spine-tingling message they enshrine probably came from outside the solar system.

There have been other books about the pyramids, and this is not the first time that they have been associated with extraterrestrial beings. It is, however, the first time that an outer space connection with the pyramids has been suggested by a writer who is widely respected as a serious commentator on the subject.”

The Massachusetts Miracle: High Technology and Economic Revitalization by David Lampe (£10.50)Publisher: The MIT Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0262121344]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper frayed slightly, a little discoloured. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Just 15 years ago, soaring unemployment, staggering state budget overruns, and tough competition from beyond its borders had driven Massachusetts’ aging economy to its knees.

Each contribution is placed in context by a brief introduction, and an overview weaves the various threads together into a coherent picture of how the “Massachusetts Miracle” evolved.”
