From the cover: “The party of Gladstone, Asquith and Lloyd George, the Liberal Party emerged in mid-Victorian Britain from a combination of Whigs, Radicals and Peelite Tories. It was a dominant force in Britain, and the world, at the height of the power of the British Empire. Split by Gladstone’s Home Rule Bills, it nevertheless returned to power in Edwardian England and held it until after the outbreak the First World War, with Lloyd George heading a Coalition Government from 1916-22. Riddled by internal divisions and increasingly challenged by Labour, the party lost ground in Parliament, becoming little more than a rump for many years. With the foundation of the Social Democrats in 1981, and their subsequent merger with the Liberals as Liberal Democrats in 1988, a modern version of the party emerged, under Paddy Ashdown and now Charles Kennedy as a significant third force in British politics.”

A Concise History of England: From Stonehenge to the Microchip by F. E. Halliday (£9.50)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 1980Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0500271828]Condition: Very Good. Gently faded at the spine and onto the marins of the wraps otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Revised Reprint. [First: 1964] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Now been revised and updated for this paperback edition to take account of the most recent events. The author aims to present the history of England in a form short enough to be grasped — and seen — as a whole. Like all nations, England has a past which includes crimes and follies, but it is also one that is less turbulent than most and one displaying a series of achievements — above all, perhaps, the evolution of democratic institutions and the creation of a social order that has been strengthened by extensions of liberty, tolerance and freedom of speech. The book emphasizes the constructive features of English history and clearly identifies the central theme — the successful reconciliation of order and liberty in English life and society. Stonehenge, the Norman Conguest, Magna Carta, the Wars of the Roses, the Spanish Armada, the Civil Wars, the ‘Year of Victories’, Nelson and Trafalgar, Churchill as war leader — here are the key events, places and personalities of English history, brought together in a superbly illustrated volume which provides the perfect introduction to a fascinating subject.”Notes: Size: 9" x 7". 240 pages. Haig's Command: A Reassessment by Denis Winter (£7.50)Publisher: Penguin — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 014139093X]Condition: Very Good.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Until the 1960s, Britain’s contribution to the Great War seemed clear-cut, the roles of her chief players generally accepted. Haig campaigned consistently for concentration of effort against Germany’s main army. The politicians, on the other hand, preferred to look for short cuts to victory in Italy, the Balkans or the Middle East. Tactically, Haig urged a major battle in the Belgian province of Flanders from the start. The politicians procrastinated, plotted and favoured action anywhere but Flanders. When it came to the actual fighting, the traditional view was that Haig had pounded the Germans with a string of attrition battles, worn them down and in the end won that sweeping victory he always predicted. There was room for heated argument over his methods, but when the small size of Britain’s pre-war professional army was added to its lack of experience in recent European wars, the slow, costly progress towards the relative efficiency of 1918 seemed inevitable.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 362 pages.
