Honest George Monck by J. D. [John David] Griffith Davies (£153.00)Publisher: John Lane The Bodley Head — 1936Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with many short nicks and chips. Leans slightly. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “A SIMPLE soldier of fortune, Monck became one of the foremost captains of his age. Yet there was nothing of the sabre-rattling militarist about him. His pacification of the Highlands of Scotland, achieved with surprisingly little bloodshed, marked him down as a first-rate administrator. As a sailor, too, he was Blake’s equal; and to him even more than to Blake belongs the credit of having removed the Dutch naval menace. But surpassing these, the crowning glory of Monck’s work for England was the Stuart Restoration in 1660.

However, there is more in this book than a record of Monck’s political and military work. There is a clearly-cut picture of the man himself — the soldier who never asked his men to do that which he was afraid to do himself; the sailor who strove to better conditions on the lower deck; the indulgent husband and father; the faithful friend; and always the true patriot. All these aspects of Monck’s life are delightfully brought out by Mr. Davies. And perhaps for the first time he enables both students of history and general readers to understand and appreciate one of England’s greatest sons.”

Freedom and Limit: A Dialogue Between Literature and Christian Doctrine by Paul S. Fiddes (£128.00)Publisher: Macmillan — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0333491424]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the first blank — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: “Writers of novels, plays and poems use their imagination with an evident freedom; by contrast, makers of Christian doctrine seem to impose limits, reducing the open-ended meaning of images to exact concepts and summing up the loose ends of stories in one unified Story. But the author of this study sets out to show how images and stories in literature can actually help the theologian to make doctrinal statements, while at the same time careful theological thinking can assist the critical reading of literary texts. Such a dialogue is worked out in studies of the poetry of William Blake and Gerard Manley Hopkins, and the novels of D. H. Lawrence, Iris Murdoch and William Golding. Here the tension between the freedom of imagination and the limits of doctrine is seen to be only a part of more far-reaching tensions of freedom in human life, which account for a sense of ‘fallenness’ and which a dialogue between literature and Christian doctrine can do much to illuminate. In all this, the relationship between imagination and revelation is never far from the centre of discussion.”

An Ageing Population: A Reader and Sourcebook by Edited by Vida Carver & Penny Liddiard (£56.50)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1978Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0340233737]Condition: Very Good. Gently faded at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “At the beginning of this century, approximately seven per cent of the population was aged sixty or more. Today, the proportion is twenty per cent and is likely to rise still further, bringing with it an increased demand for the provision of services for the elderly, and placing new emphasis on the problems — personal, social, medical, economic — associated with old age. An Ageing Population examines these problems and the ways in which they affect the elderly individual, his family, the caring professional and the community as a whole. The papers in this book have been drawn from a variety of sources to provide a broad perspective on the needs and circumstances of the elderly. Thus extracts from the literature of sociology, psychology, medicine, social work and nursing appear side by side with personal accounts of ageing, disability and the activities of voluntary workers. Together, they reinforce the view that the problems and challenges associated with longevity require a community response matched with inter-professional understanding and cooperation. An Ageing Population, a set book for the Open University post-experience course of the same title (P252), will be invaluable to all those professionally responsible for the care of the elderly, as well as the concerned general reader.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 434 pages. Scott Peck in his world-wide bestseller The Road Less Travelled. Dr Peck’s argument that we need a ‘new psychology of love, traditional values and spiritual growth’ has found a wide and receptive audience and thousands of study groups have been formed to explore his ideas in greater depth. To aid them, Alice and Walden Howard have prepared this manual. It is a book for teachers, educationalists, psychiatrists, social and community workers, ministers of religion, spiritual counsellors and, indeed, everyone seeking a way out of the stresses and tensions of today’s violent and fragmented world.”Notes: Size: .200. 152 pages. The Puritan Gift: Triumph, Collapse and Revival of An American Dream by Kenneth Hopper & William Hopper (£53.00)Publisher: I. B. Tauris & Co. — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1850434190]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Where does the Protestant work ethic come from? And how did America achieve such dominance in management for so long?

The Puritan Gift traces the origins and characteristics of an American managerial culture which, over the course of three centuries, turned a handful of small colonies into the greatest economic and political power on earth. It argues that the energy, social mobility, competitiveness and capacity for innovation, all of which lie at the heart of that culture, have their origins in the discipline and ethos of America’s first wave of European immigrants: the Puritans. Drawing lessons from their own extensive experience, the authors warn that, as America distances itself from the core values which underlay its commercial and economic success during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it puts its own future prosperity and security at risk.

The book also explores how American managerial culture has spread throughout the world. In particular it examines the impact of the US occupation of Japan on the social and manufacturing mores of that country and explains how America’s inherited style of management interacted with Japanese traditions.

This is an original exploration of the dramatic and far-reaching consequences of the Puritans’ ‘gift’ to America — the ethos which produced the early success of America and what came to be known as the American dream.”

Undressing Cinema: Clothing and Identity in the Movies by Stella Bruzzi (£47.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1997Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0415139562]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Filmography; Black & White Photographs;

From Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy, to sharp-suited gangsters in Tarantino movies, clothing is central to film. In Undressing Cinema, Stella Bruzzi explores how far from being mere accessories, clothes are key elements in the construction of cinematic identities, and she proposes new and dynamic links between cinema, fashion and costume history, gender, queer theory and psychoanalysis. Bruzzi uses case studies drawn from contemporary popular cinema to reassess established ideas about costume and fashion in cinema, and to challenge conventional interpretations of how masculinity and femininity are constructed through clothing.”

Principles of Agricultural Economics: Markets and Prices in Less Developed Countries by David Colman; Trevor Young; (£43.00)Publisher: Cambridge University Press — 1995Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0521336643]Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Reprint. [First: 1989] From the cover: “This textbook addresses the main economic principles required by agricultural economists involved in rural development. The principles of ‘micro-economies’ or ‘price-theory’ are of relevance to economists everywhere, but this book reinforces the message of their relevance for rural development by explaining the theory in the specific context of the agricultural and food sectors of developing countries. Hypothetical and actual empirical illustrations drawn almost exclusively from such countries distinguish this book from other economic principles texts that draw their examples almost invariably from industrialised countries, and also from books more oriented to the issues of rural development. The first half of the book deals with the underlying principles of production, supply and demand. These are essential tools for the study and management of the agricultural sector and food markets. In the second half, supply and demand are brought together into a chapter of equilibrium and exchange. This is followed by chapters on trade and the theory of economic welfare. In the final chapter it is shown that much of the material in the earlier chapters can be combined by agricultural economists into a system for analysing and comparing the effects of alternative agricultural policies. The ability of agricultural economics to provide a consistent framework for the analysis of policy problems thus enables it to make a key contribution to rural development.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). Measurement of Responsibility: A Study of Work, Payment and Individual Capacity by Elliott Jaques (£33.00)Publisher: Tavistock Publications — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with several short tears, a little loss at the spine ends and a 1" closed tear to the head of the upper panel. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Small name sticker to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “THE MEASUREMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY presents perhaps the most funda mental approach yet achieved to the recurring individual and social stresses which disturb the industrial scene. Its theme is that one of the central factors underlying these disturbances is the absence of any objective and agreed method of assessing the re sponsibility carried by individuals at their work.

In the course of practical work by the author in collaboration with members of the Glacier Metal Com pany (an engineering concern), a re definition of the problem has emerged. What is experienced by individuals as level or weight or size of responsi bility has been observed to be con nected solely with the discretion they are required to exercise in doing their work. It has furthermore been dis covered that level of responsibility can be measured objectively and pre cisely by the maximum span of time during which an individual is expected to exercise discretion on his own account until his use of discretion is subjected to review.

By using this measurement — which he terms the time-span of discretion — Dr. Jaques has noted that individuals carrying the same maximum time-span in their work demand—quite independently — as a fair and just return for their work, precisely the same earnings and the same status, regardless of the type of work con cerned. He concludes from these findings that an unrecognized wage and salary structure is operated in tuitively in industry. But because it is unrecognized, departures from it are likely. And it is precisely such de partures which lead to trouble.

In the light of his findings, the author re-examines the meaning of work, of payment for work, and of the capacity of individuals to exercise discretion and discharge responsibility.

The methods described, and the results already obtained from their use, may indicate a route towards the resolution of some aspects of the industrial unrest and individual dis satisfaction with work which are such a crippling feature of modern industrial life. The book, in style as well as in content, is intended for economists, sociologists, political scientists, psychologists, and other social scientists — as well as industrial ists, trade unionists, government officials, and other administrators who are concerned with these problems.”

Hong Kong's History: State and Society Under Colonial Rule by Edited by Tak-Wing Ngo (£32.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0415208688]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Tables;

From the cover: “Hong Kong’s rise from obscure fishing port to world city is usually put down to good colonial rule by Britain. This book challenges such a view and shows how the city’s success was shaped by the ruling elite and other native Hong Kongers.

Rewriting Hong Kong’s history from the bottom up, the chapters investigate vital, but hitherto obscured, aspects of the colony’s rise. They cover the Chinese collaboration with the colonial regime, legal discrimination and intimidation, rural politics, social movements, government-business relations, industrial policy, flexible manufacturing and colonial historiography.

Drawing together contributions from historians, sociologists and political scientists, the book highlights the role played by a variety of social actors in Hong Kong’s history and differs both from recent celebrations of British colonialism and anti-colonial Chinese nationalism.”

The Law Is a White Dog: How Legal Rituals Make and Unmake Persons by Joan Dayan (£29.00)Publisher: Princeton University Press — 2011Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0691070911]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “Abused dogs, prisoners tortured in Guantanamo and supermax facilities, or slaves killed by the state — all are deprived of personhood through legal acts. Such deprivations have recurred throughout history, and the law sustains these terrors and banishments even as it upholds the civil order. Examining such troubling cases, The Law Is a White Dog tackles key societal questions: How does the law construct our identities? How do its rules and sanctions make or unmake persons? And how do the supposedly rational claims of the law define marginal entities, both natural and supernatural, including ghosts, dogs, slaves, terrorist suspects, and felons? Reading the language, allusions, and symbols of legal discourse, and bridging distinctions between the human and nonhuman, Colin Dayan looks at how the law disfigures individuals and animals, and how slavery, punishment, and torture create unforeseen effects in our daily lives.

Moving seamlessly across genres and disciplines, Dayan considers legal practices and spiritual beliefs from medieval England, the North American colonies, and the Caribbean that have survived in our legal discourse, and she explores the civil deaths of felons and slaves through lawful repression. Tracing the legacy of slavery in the United States in the structures of the contemporary American prison system and in the administrative detention of ghostly supermax facilities, she also demonstrates how contemporary jurisprudence regarding cruel and unusual punishment prepared the way for abuses in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.

Using conventional historical and legal sources to answer unconventional questions, The Law Is a White Dog illuminates stark truths about civil society’s ability to marginalize, exclude, and dehumanize.”

Architecture and the Environment: Contemporary Bioclimatic Buildings by David Lloyd Jones (£24.00)Publisher: London: Laurence King — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1856691039]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Publishers shrink wrap, now removed, has caused light rippling to the head of both panels. Dust wrapper slightly tanned on the verso. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Cutaways; Black & White Photographs; Graphs; Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Sustainable building has commonly been seen as separate from mainstream architecture and has been accorded the status of worthy but dull design. Adopting the term bioclimatic in preference to green to describe buildings which are inspired by nature and have a clear strategy for minimizing environmental depredation, this book seeks to revise this judgement. Introductory chapters trace the history of bioclimatic design in architecture, exploring the relationship between architecture and the natural environment.

An examination of three projects currently under construction points to future directions in bioclimatic architecture. The contemporary projects featured in the main section of the book are diverse — from office buildings which flaunt their measures for energy conservation in the form of external solar shading, wind towers, glazed atria and photovoltaic modules, to a church built from tubes of recycled paper and a museum constructed in timber and inserted in a woodland setting. Architects whose work is featured include Tadao Ando, Shigeru Ban, Edward Cullinan, Foster and Partners, Herzog and Partners, Glenn Murcutt and Arata Isozaki.”

British Research and Development Aircraft: Seventy Years At the Leading Edge by Ray Sturtivant (£24.00)Publisher: Haynes — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0854296972]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Every advance that has ever occurred in aviation has been the result of a new problem encountered and then solved. From the very earliest days Britain was in the forefront of progress by empirical means, and by 1917 it was already becoming the practice to build special aircraft for trials purposes to test some theory or line of research without necessarily any intention of placing those machines in production. Very soon this arrangement was formalized by the issuing of Government contacts to an Air Ministry specification.

The aircraft and designs encompassed within this system embrace most of the more important aspects of British aeronautical progress, and in this book Ray Sturtivant charts the history of such developments over a period spanning some seven decades.

The twenty years leading up to the Second World War saw research into every aspect of aeronautical theory, with projects gaining official sponsorship on a numerical scale which would be quite impracticable today. Early projects included investigations into the understanding of control in slow speed flight and the elimination of the dreaded ‘spin’ which had claimed the lives of so many pilots of the RFC and RAF.

These were the years of such aircraft as the Westland-Hill Pterodactyl which investigated the properties of swept wings, the knowledge gained being put to good use many years later in — amongst other developments — the Avro Vulcan bomber. Likewise the pre-war development of rotor-craft in the form of the Cierva and Hafner autogiros paved the way first to the helicopter and then latterly to the tilt-rotor aircraft of today.

Post-war, after enormous strides made as the result of the conflict, there were problems to solve afresh as the result of the adoption of the jet engine and the related increases in speed and height that became attainable. Similarly the jet engine provided the impetus to the many projects avidly seeking the solution to the Vertical Take-off and Landing conundrum unravelled so brilliantly in the Hawker Harrier.

Ray Sturtivant’s deeply researched text is accompanied by photographs or line drawings of almost every one of the numerous aircraft covered. These images — from the oddest to the sublimely beautiful — in themselves provide a fascinating chronology of seventy years at the leading edge of aviation technology which is now taking Britain into the 21st century.”
