The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov (£64.00)Publisher: London: Collins & Harvill Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002619059]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, without loss although untidy and now tape-reinforced on the verso, with sunning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise bar for small tear at the foot of the last two leaves. Description: From the cover: “The time — 1918. The place — Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, torn by revolution and civil war. The people — the Turbin family of two brothers and a sister, whose home is a calm pool of affection, warmth and humanity in a maelstrom of cold, snow, violence and sudden death. Alexei Turbin, eldest brother and head of the family, is a doctor returned from the war; his sister Elena is married to an unpleasant Baltic German who scuttles away like a rat as soon as danger threatens. The youngest is Nikolka, at seventeen just out of officer-cadet school and a volunteer in one of the scratch units manned by officers which formed the White Guard in the Ukraine. A cuckoo in their nest is their hopeless cousin from Zhitomir, Lariosik, a charming bungler who always says the wrong thing, breaks everything he touches, yet is welcomed into the Turbins’ charmed circle with love and kindness.

At the beginning, the Germans are still occupying Kiev, propping up the feeble regime of the Hetman Skoropadsky. Their cause lost in advance by the Hetman’s ignoble defection, Alexei and Nikolka Turbin and their White Guard officer friends make a brave but futile attempt to resist the capture of Kiev by the adventurer Petlyura and his army of long-moustached, baggy-trousered, trigger-happy Ukrainian roughnecks.

Savage while it lasts, Petlyura’s occupation of Kiev is at least short and as his motley troops slink away, Bulgakov coins an image of power which is the perfect antithesis to the cosy, womb-like interior of the Turbin’s home: on the track outside Kiev, hissing gently, waiting to grind inexorably into the city, stands the huge steel-clad articulated juggernaut of a Bolshevik armoured train.”

Knights of the Black Cross: Hitler's Panzerwaffe and Its Leaders by Bryan Perrett (£58.50)Publisher: Robert Hale — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0709028067]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “The German Armoured Corps — the Panzerwaffe — was instrumental in the mighty conquests of the Nazis between 1939 and 1942 and in the remaining years of the war it provided the very backbone of Germany’s defence. Although its strength never exceeded one-fifth of the German Army, the commitment of the Panzerwaffe’s officers to the traditional Annihilation Concept made an enormous impact on the Second World War, particularly on the Eastern Front. The titanic struggles which took place there, after the early victories in Poland, the West and the Balkans, demonstrated the German tank soldiers’ superior tactical abilities and provided the basis of Soviet war theories to this day.

Bryan Perrett’s meticulously researched and incisive account tells the story of this remarkable band of soldiers, the evolution of their tactics and the development of their superlative fighting vehicles. An authoritative study which will fascinate the military expert and general reader alike.”

From the cover: “Fifteenth in the Olyslager Auto Library series and the third to deal with British Cars, this volume provides detailed coverage of civilian and military cars of most makes and types produced during the period 1940-1946.

Starting with the final year in which ‘pre-war’ civilian cars were made, albeit in small numbers, the book continues with a survey of cars, armoured cars and car-derived vehicles such as light and heavy utilities which were used by the Armed Forces in World War II, and many of which later found their way to ‘civvy street’.

The final part of the book deals with the first post-war models, many of which were put into production in the latter part of 1945. Most but not all of these were slightly modified pre-war types.”

Citadel: The Battle of Kursk by Robin Cross (£23.00)Publisher: Michael O'Mara — 1994Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1854797204]Condition: Very Good. Light reading creases to the spine with rubbing to the tail. Text complete, clean and tight. A good copy. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Citadel is the greatest armoured clash in the history of the world and the decisive battle of World War II — the last great German offensive on the Eastern front. Its aim was to claw back the initiative after the surrender of the Sixth Army at Stalingrad in January 1943. Vast armies were engaged, and the titanic air battles included the most costly single day of aerial warfare of all time. This was the battle of Kursk which Hitler confessed made his ‘stomach turn over’.

In Citadel, author Robin Cross provides a detailed picture of the Battle of Kursk, from the strategic tug-of-war waged within both high commands to the first-hand experiences of the troops on the ground and those in the air. The battle is placed firmly within the wider strategic context of the spring and summer of 1943, a time when Hitler and Stalin were taking decisions which would decide the course of the war and the peace which followed.”

The Crucible of War: Western Desert 1941 by Barrie Pitt (£19.00)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0224017713]Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. Edges of DJ somewhat ruffled.Description: Illustrated with B&W photographs and maps. From the cover: “Shortly before midnight on June 11th, 1940, six troops of the 11th Hussars drove their Rolls-Royce armoured cars through gaps in the wire fence marking the border between Egypt and Tripolitania, and ambushed a small convoy of lorries crammed with bewildered Italian frontier troops whom nobody had bothered to inform of Mussolini’s declaration of war on Britain, made 24 hours before from the balcony of the Palazzo Venezia. Thus began the Desert War — the land campaign that meant more to the British people than any other between 1939 and 1945, and probably as much as the Battle of Britain in the air. It was to last for three years and secure for the allies the vital Middle East oil supplies without which they would have lost the war against the dictators.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Modern Warfare 1851-Present by H. W. [Hannsjoachim Wolfgang] Koch (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241282]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a diagonal crease to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Colour Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: “The third and final volume of the trilogy beginning with Medieval Warfare, and continuing with The Rise of Modern Warfare, is Modern Warfare 1815-Present by H W Koch. Medieval Warfare covered the development of weapons, strategy and tactics from the Fall of the Roman Empire to the Thirty Years’ War. The second volume, The Rise of Modern Warfare, covered the period from the end of the Thirty Years’ War in 1648 to the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. This volume carries the story forward from the Battle of Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna in 1815, through the development of heavy artillery, rapid-fire weapons, such as the machine gun, and other advances of the nineteenth century which presaged the wars of attrition such as World War I through World War II to the present day.

The year-long siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War and the Siege of Vicksburg during the American Civil War, as well as the Virginia campaigns of Robert E Lee, were precursors of modern total warfare to a far greater extent than Britain’s easy colonial victories in India and Africa fought during the same period. The rapid victories of the Prussian armies of von Moltke over Austria at Koniggratz in 1866 and the French at Sedan in 1870 were the results of a modern massed army fighting against traditional professional armies not greatly advanced from their eighteenth century counterparts. The introduction of the needle gun, the Maxim gun and the Lee-Enfield rifle, combined with the evolution of the tank as a replacement for armoured cavalry were developments bound to change the nature of warfare in the twentieth century.

The war of attrition fought by Britain in South Africa, including the long sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking, as well as the six-month long siege of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War were portents of a new age in warfare for the warlords of Europe who were to launch World War I. They hoped for a war that would end in weeks. Millions of combatants and civilians alike were slaughtered in the four-year-long war of attrition in Europe between 1914 and 1918. The introduction of aerial warfare and naval blockades, which could starve a nation into submission, made twentieth century warfare unlike any previously encountered. By the time of World War II, whole nations, not merely their armies, found themselves locked in deadly combat for years until one side was worn down into helpless impotence. No one in Europe could escape the effect of the total war that was waged from 1939 to 1945.

The horrendous results of the holocaust which caused the deaths of tens of millions altered the character of warfare once again after World War II. The entire progression from “wars of gentlemen” through total war to the post-1945 age of limited war, including Korea, Algeria and Vietnam, as well as the four wars in the Middle East is described. The limited wars of the post-1945 period were perhaps the precursors of a new, even more terrible form of total conflict should a third world war ever occur.

Illustrated by hundreds of contemporary paintings, action photographs in both color and monochrome, and replete with technical drawings, maps and cutaway illustrations of the relevant weapons as well as special drawings of the uniforms of the period. Modern Warfare should become a classic and essential reading in the library of anyone interested in modern militarv historv.”

The Fight For the Channel Ports: Calais to Brest 1940: A Study in Confusion by Michael Glover (£13.00)Publisher: Leo Cooper in association with Secker and Warburg — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0436182106]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “In the summer of 1940 all British attention was focused on the Deliverance of Dunkirk as the Expeditionary Force, its communications cut, fought its way back to the coast. But since the War historians have given little thought to the British troops, including the country’s only armoured division, who were trapped in France outside the Dunkirk perimeter. The Royal Navy eventually evacuated 144,171 men but more than 20,000 failed to return. This is the dramatic story of the last actions fought by the abandoned BEF troops who struggled down the Channel coast, selling their lives dearly in a desperate attempt to reach safety. A few incidents have been told before — the defence of Calais by the Greenjackets; the trapping of the Highland Division at St. Valery: yet the Battle Honours Amiens 1940 and Abbeville are as little known as they are rare, and Doullens was not rated as an Honour despite the handsome tribute paid by the enemy to the ill-armed, undertrained Territorials (12th Eastern Division) who defended it. Now their ordeal is told in full. This is a story of muddle and confusion redeemed only by the bravery of the fighting troops. A story in which all military actions were tempered by political considerations and in which Government policy demanded a show of solidarity with France, in the hope that the powerful French navy would continue to fight on the Allied side. Thus the abandoned BEF were beset with order and counter-order and, as a result of the lack of unified command, thousands of men were lost and vast amounts of desperately needed stores and equipment had to be destroyed or left to the enemy. It was a classic example of the way in which war should not be waged.”

Letters Home: 1926-1945 by Brian Johnston (£12.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicholson — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297841270]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “From the year Brian Johnston went to boarding school in 1920 until he was demobbed in 1945, he wrote a letter to his mother almost every week. She kept a great many of them and, to his family’s surprise, a bundle of over 400 of Brian’s letters were found hidden in a box in his study after his death in 1994.

They cover Brian’s years at Eton and Oxford, his job in the family coffee business in the City, Hamburg and Brazil, and his service with die Grenadier Guards during the war.

The letters are warm and affectionate, witty and full of life, and Brian’s cheerful personality shines through on every page. They reveal his schoolboy love of bad jokes, cricket and chocolate cake. They disclose how he plays practical jokes at Oxford with his friend William Douglas Home and how, in trying to learn about the coffee business, he dreams of becoming an actor.

He recounts meeting leading figures such as Winston Churchill and Lady Astor. In Germany he hears Goebbels speak at a rally. He tells how Alec Douglas-Home borrows his shirt to go to Munich with Neville Chamberlain for his momentous meeting with Adolf Hitler. His war correspondence includes vivid descriptions of jubilation as the Guards Armoured Division liberated towns across France and Belgium at the end of the war.

Brian Johnston published several volumes of autobiography, but he wrote little of his early life. These, often intimate, letters provide a remarkable insight into one of our most loved radio and television personalities.”

Constructed in the utmost secrecy and at enormous cost, and dismissed by many as a ‘white elephant’, the ‘Great Wall of Germany’ very nearly lived up to the Fuhrer’s expectations, and is judged to have prolonged the war in Europe by six months. The Battle for the Siegfried Line was not only the most important of the 1944-45 campaign against Germany, it was to prove the key battle in the entire war in the west. It raged for six, long, bloody months along a front of 350 miles, and cost over a quarter of a million British, American, Canadian and French casualties.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". An Ancient Air: A Biography of John Stringfellow of Chard, the Victorian Aeronautical Pioneer by Harald Penrose (£9.50)Publisher: Airlife — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781840371840]Condition: Near Fine.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “An Ancient Air portrays the hitherto only briefly recorded life of John Stringfellow of Chard (1799-1883), the first man in the world to demonstrate that engine-powered winged flight was practicable.

Whereas earlier general aviation histories tend to discount Stringfellow’s work, An Ancient Air reveals that his absorption with aviation was lifelong, starting with the construction of balloons, recorded here for the first time. Though professionally a lace-machine specialist, he was interested in all aspects of scientific development — he was a founder member of the Chard Institution for educational lectures, pioneered local photography, devised medical apparatus and even patented an armoured gun-carriage.

This book seeks to demonstrate the relationship of Stringfellow’s work with that of his colleague, William Samuel Henson. They worked closely together on various aeronautical projects between the years 1835 and 1847, and the author puts forward evidence that it was Stringfellow who was entirely responsible for the historic 1848 monoplane, the first ever engine-driven model aeroplane to make a free flight. After Henson emigrated to the USA in 1848, Stringfellow continued to design revolutionary aeroplane models, such as the triplane he entered in the the 1868 Crystal Palace Exhibition.

In his old age Stringfellow maintained his interest in aviation and passed on his enthusiasm to his son, Frederick John Stringfellow, who later built a model biplane and a multi-plane.

An Ancient Air, meticulously researched by Harald Penrose, an acknowledged authority on aviation history, presents for the first time a detailed account of Stringfellow’s historic discoveries and sheds further welcome light on the pioneering days of aviation.”

Meet Maggie Joy Blunt, a thoroughly modern young woman, bored out of her mind in a metal company in Slough; George Taylor, a curmudgeonly accountant from Sheffield, who gets annoyed when woken by fireworks celebrating the end of the war. Edie Rutherford, Sheffield housewife and Socialist, who is always arguing with her hairdresser; B Charles, a gay antiques dealer in Edinburgh and a horrific snob. And meet Herbert Brush, London pensioner, active for his age, forever creosoting his garden fence and author of ambitious but appalling poetry. In Our Hidden Lives these ordinary people — who never knew one another — have come together to make an extraordinary book.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 536 pages. Tanks in Battle by Col. H. C. B. Rogers (£6.50)Publisher: Sphere — 1972Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0722174292]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers with tape remnants at the tips. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “The main purpose of this book is to deal with the modern armoured battle and the development of the Tank. It may be said that with the disappearance of the horse from modern armies the roles of the two main divisions of the cavalry of the past — the heavy mounted troops used for shock tactics and the light horsemen employed for obtaining information and screening purposes — have devolved on various types of armoured vehicles. In the earlier chapters the leading principles of these aspects of warfare are traced through the centuries. The technical design of the tank of all the contestants in both World Wars is very fully illustrated. Specifications of armament, armour and engines are dealt with in great detail and reflect the Author’s profound knowledge of his subject.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 240 pages.
