From the cover: “As a boy he had one ambition, to be a professional footballer and to play for England. He achieved not only this boyhood ambition but the footballer’s dream and the final accolade when England won the World Cup at Wembley on July 30th, 1966. From the coal-mining village of Ashington to becoming one of the greatest forwards England has ever produced has been a long, hard road and the journey makes a deeply compelling story. He rose to fame on the wave of sentiment which swept Europe following the tragic air disaster at Munich in 1958… a disaster which decimated the Manchester United team which had been so carefully moulded by Matt Busby. Since then Bobby has never faltered. He tells, with the help of Neil Burden-Smith, of his life, thoughts, of Manchester United, of three World Cups and what it was like to wear England’s white shirt and play with and against some of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen. The Khrushchev Pattern by Frank Gibney (£13.00)Publisher: Prentice-Hall International — 1961Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with some very small nicks. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “DURING THE HALF DECADE between 1955 and 1960, men watched with dreadful fascination the uncoiling of the Khrushchev Pattern, one of the most startling switches in the history of international politics, and one of the cleverest. The leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, used his power to swing his country and the entire Communist movement along a path of “competitive coexistence” that seemed to challenge not only the tactics of Stalin’s past rule but the very premises of the Communist system. Frank Gibney shows how successfully this new tactic operated with the world’s Communist parties and their sympathizers—in the widest variety of circumstances. In some areas it posed great problems for Khrushchev, because its surface friendliness and emphasis on a Popular Front approach threatened the historic unity of Communist discipline. At moments, as in the Hungarian revolt of 1956, the entire approach had to be sacrificed to the ruthless needs of Soviet power politics. But by and large Khrushchev’s “soft sell” version of Communism proved a far more formidable menace to the Free World than Stalin’s rigid line. Although the emphasis in his policy became openly aggressive after the U-2 incident and Khrushchev’s Summit breakup in the spring of 1960, the gains made by the Khrushchev Pattern were substantial. In a world where so many of the new, uncommitted nations appeared so ready to play off East against West, the superficially reasonable Khrushchev Pattern was surely as terrible a threat as Stalin’s more obvious aggression.”Notes: Jacket designed by Robert Jonas. The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World by Niall Ferguson (£11.50)Publisher: Allen Lane — 2008Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781846141928]Condition: Very Good+. Slight reading crease to the spine otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “Bread, cash, dosh, dough, loot: call it what you like, it matters. To Christians, love of it is the root of all evil. To generals, it is the sinews of war. To revolutionaries, it is the shackles of labour. But in ‘The Ascent of Money’, Niall Ferguson shows that finance is in fact the foundation of human progress. With the clarity and verve for which he is famed, Niall Ferguson reveals financial history as the essential back-story behind all history. He explains why the origins of the French Revolution lie in a stock market bubble caused by a convicted Scots murderer. He shows how financial failure turned Argentina from the world’s sixth richest country into an inflation-ridden basket case — and how a financial revolution is propelling the world's most populous country from poverty to power. Yet the most important lesson of financial history is that sooner or later every bubble bursts. And that’s why, whether you're scraping by or rolling in it, there's never been a better time to understand the ascent of money.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 442 pages. The Autobiography: My Manchester United Years by Sir Bobby Charlton (£10.50)Publisher: Headline — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0755316193]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In this first part of Sir Bobby’s remarkable autobiography he describes his early life growing up in a tight-knit mining community in the north-east of England and charts his extraordinary career at Manchester United. Charlton is United through and through. A member of the original ‘Busby Babes’, Sir Bobby devoted his career to the club. He won everything the game had to offer, played alongside some of the greats such as Best and Law and, on a snow-covered runway in Munich in February 1958, was involved in arguably the most shocking football tragedy of all time. With his beloved Reds, Charlton tasted FA Cup victory in the emotional final of 1963, won three First Division championships and in 1968 reached the pinnacle of club success, by defeating Benfica in the European Cup final. Inevitably, such highs were balanced with no less dramatic lows — the 1957 European Cup semi-final, the highly charged 1958 FA Cup loss only weeks after Munich, and the 1969 European Cup defeat by Milan.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". William Walton: Behind The Façade by Susana Walton (£10.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0193151561]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edges of text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1948. The 46-year-old English composer William Walton, rising genius of English music, composer of Facade, Belshazzar’s Feast, a superb Symphony, and a host of other brilliant works, arrives to attend an international conference of the Performing Right Society. Miss Susana Gil, the attractive 22-year-old daughter of a well-to-do Argentine lawyer, is the personal assistant to the representative of the British Council and has organized a press conference for the distinguished visitor. Walton, unmarried but not noted for his celibacy, is asked by a journalist what he thinks of Argentine women. Looking directly at the glamorous Miss Gil, he replies: ‘I think so highly of them that I intend to... meet lots of them!’ Only fear of causing too much of a stir (a rather untypical reticence) prevented him from saying ‘I intend to marry one’. After only two weeks he and Miss Gil were engaged, much against the wishes of her family and much to the alarm of Walton’s friends and colleagues in London, who were deeply suspicious of ‘love at first sight’. Yet unpredictability and luck had already played a large part in Walton’s life, from his admission as a nine-year-old Lancashire schoolboy to Christ Church Choir School in Oxford; his discovery by Sacheverell Sitwell while an undergraduate at Oxford; his adoption by all three Sitwells; the emergence of a publisher willing to back his individual music; and the unsolicited and often unexpected offers of support from wealthy admirers. Walton’s instinct for self-preservation did not fail him in his choice of bride, for Susana Valeria Rosa Maria Gil Passo, to give the author her full name, proved and remained the ideal partner with whom Walton could fulfil a plan that had been in his mind before their marriage: to leave England and live in Italy. Shortly after settling in his house in London, they rented an old convent in Forio, on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples, loaded up Walton’s treasured Bentley with the essentials for a six-month visit, and took up residence in a property of considerable charm but few comforts. Ischia would become their home for the rest of Walton’s life (he died in 1983), and their joint creation, the magnificent house and garden of La Mortella, is now to become a Walton arts centre and recital hall for the further development of talented young musicians. Susana Walton has created an affectionate and revealing portrait of one of England’s greatest composers. Written with an engaging candour, her memories of 35 years of marriage are alive with colourful anecdotes of some of the people who featured prominently in Walton’s life. There are vivid pen portraits of the Sitwells, Imma von Doernberg, Alice Wimborne, Laurence Olivier, Malcolm Sargent, Benjamin Britten, Wystan Auden, Yehudi Menuhin, Julian Bream, and many other musicians and personalities prominent in contemporary history.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Defence Of Freedom by The Editors of La Prensa (£9.50)Publisher: T. V. Boardman & Co. — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with slight fraying at the spine ends. Leans slightly. Boards slightly bowed. Price Clipped. Offset to the blanks. Description: From the cover: “In the first issue of La Prensa, dated October 18th, 1869, its founder, Dr. Jose Paz wrote: “Truth and honesty are to determine our point of view. Liberty, progress and civilisation are the only ends we pursue. As no financial considerations have weight with us, we are confident of maintaining a sufficiently independent attitude to remain genuine interpreters of public opinion”. To that first statement of policy La Prensa has held unswervingly ever since, and as a result, it became not only the leading newspaper of Buenos Aires but the greatest Spanish-language newspaper in the world.

Alberto Gainza Paz, editor-in-chief and grandson of its founder, who foiled arrest by the Peron government by escaping across the River Plate to Uruguay in March 1951, has with his fellow editors given here for the first time the astonishing story of what La Prensa went through, beginning in 1940, when the government of a hitherto democratic country began to lean the other way. Overt action started in 1944 when the police closed down the paper for five days because of an editorial, criticising hospital management. As the screws tightened, mobs assaulted the paper’s famous building whose doors had been open day and night, but which now had to be buttressed with steel reinforcements; the editor was arrested, then released, without explanation; an “oral newspaper” started up across the street, consisting of loudspeakers that blared scurrility to distract La Prensa’s staff; a custom’s violation was trumped up; and as the climax approached there came the “great persuader” of paper rationing. Still the publishers and the thirteen hundred loyal employees refused to knuckle under.

So the Government invented a “labour” dispute. On January 25th, 1951, an ultimatum was delivered from the government-sponsored Union of News Vendors, so absurd in its demands that it was obviously meant to force La Prensa to shut down, rather than to comply. It succeeded. And the debacle was crowned with insult when on November 19th, 1951, there emerged from the same printing plant, the first issue of a newspaper with the same name, but published by the puppet union.

The events of La Prensa’s decade of martyrdom make a stirring story of a great institution — temporarily eclipsed — and a lesson for the free world to know and understand..”

Okinawa 1945: The Stalingrad of the Pacific by George Feifer (£9.50)Publisher: Tempus — 2005Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752433245]Condition: Near Fine.Description: From the cover: “As the siege of Stalingrad was the ultimate scene of carnage at the Eastern Front, the battle of Okinawa proved to be the bloodiest of the Pacific war. Almost the entire Japanese kamikaze effort of the Second World War was directed against the Americans at Okinawa. At the beginning of the battle on 1 April 1945, over one million Americans, Japanese and Okinawans were centred on the small Pacific island; by 23 June, when the Japanese commanders committed seppuku, 250,000 civilians and soldiers were dead. More people died during the battle of Okinawa than in the ensuing bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Okinawa 1945 offers a stunning account of the last major campaign of the Second World War and the largest land-sea-air engagement. Superbly researched and extraordinarily detailed, Okinawa 1945 is told at the level of the participants themselves, soldiers and civilians alike, with the dramatic stories of three individuals running through the entire account.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 447 pages. The Rules of the Game by Pierluigi Collina (£9.50)Publisher: MacMillan & Co. — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1405032790]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs.

From the cover: “The most distinctive figure in football blows the whistle on the beautiful game.

On 30 June 2002 Pierluigi Collina, universally acknowledged to be the world’s finest referee, officiated over Brazil and Germany in the World Cup Final. A matter of weeks later he was back on the field refereeing an Italian Cup first-round encounter between Sampdoria and Siena. From this unique vantage point Collina is perfectly placed to comment on the game, on the stars, on the media and on the matches he has overseen, including England’s World Cup victory over Argentina and Manchester United’s dramatic treble-winning European Cup Final.

The Rules of the Game takes us as never before into the world of the referee; the preparation needed for each game, the managing of players and officials, and the camaraderie behind the scenes. Collina describes how it feels to make a difficult decision, the pressures from the crowd and the players, while taking us through the most important, and significant, matches he has refereed. In bluntly honest terms he also describes the emotions that making a potentially game-changing mistake can provoke. Collina explains how he deals with such occasions without losing his grip on the game.

But more than anything, The Rules of the Game is Pierluigi Collina’s chance to speak out about the game he loves. With wit and insight, he tackles the issues that have altered and now threaten world football. The role of the media, the influence of big business and sponsorship — Collina is the only referee to have a commercial sponsorship deal — and the culture of ‘win at all costs’ are all targets for his impartial and impassioned views on the modern game.

Pierluigi Collina has written a fascinating and absorbing account of a life in football. Honest, unflinching and occasionally controversial The Rules of the Game is compulsory reading for anyone with a passing interest in the beautiful game.”

The Rules of the Game by Pierluigi Collina (£6.00)Publisher: Pan — 2004Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0330418726]Condition: Near Fine.Description: From the cover: “The most distinctive figure in football blows the whistle on the beautiful game.

Khrushchev's Russia by Edward Crankshaw (£3.00)Publisher: Pelican — 1963Binding: Paperback Condition: Good. Pages gently age-tanned. Fragile.Description: From the cover: “This book deals neither with the Russia of the tourist, nor with that much discussed enigma, the Russia of the conference room. There is a third country. Khrushchev’s Russia, too seldom seen for what it is, too often confused with the mask it wears in the world arena. The author does not discuss Russian foreign policy or (except in a brief account of the war and of the re-shuffling after Stalin’s death) Russian history. He is concerned with the material progress and internal aims that have established themselves under Khrushchev, with the targets set to bring the country level with America in both per capita and total production, with Khrushchev the man (whom the author sees primarily as a superb practical administrator), with the new young Russians and their mental climate, and with the inside story of the Pasternak affair, of which he gives a fascinating account. The author gives a fascinating account of the Pasternak affair, and for this new edition he has added a chapter to bring the book completely up to date.”Tags: self-government democratization soviet-yugoslav communist-front teachers union czechoslovakia anti-communist inter-american confederation berry chaban-delmas organizations bungei-shunju international stabilization mexico-russo anti-fascist brasilei-ros intelligence nationalists israeli-arab mikhailovich trabajadores independence association aufklaerung diaz-verson gordeytchik afghanistan dzerzhinsky switzerland sovestskaya intercambio cooperation stepanovich directorate declaration gopalaswamy fundamentos committees industrial assistance abderrahim liberation betancourt eisenhower estenssoro federation indonesian indo-china
