The Sign of Saturn: Poems 1980-87 by Sharon Olds (£302.00)Publisher: Secker & Warburg — 1991Binding: Paperback Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 9780436200298]Condition: Very Good+. A nice copy with just a hint of lean and slightest tanning to the spine and margins of the wrappers.Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. A nice copy of an uncommon title. Sharon Olds was born in 1942, in San Francisco. She has published three books of poetry: Satan Says (1980), The Dead and the Living (1984) and The Gold Cell (1987). What these poems share is their author's ability to gaze unflinchingly on difficult things and to describe them with a tough and tender sensuality, an honest, erotic language that holds within it not just anger and pain, but wonder, joy, and a boundless vitality.Notes: Jacket designed by Peter Dyer. The Fiction-Makers by Anne Stevenson (£54.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1985Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0192119729]Condition: Very Good. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank with offset to the reverse of the upper wrapper. Top edge of the text block slightly spotted.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. A review copy, with the review slip laid in. From the cover: “Anne Stevenson’s new collection has primarily to do with memory, with how the language of imagination shapes histories and lives. The title poem is a serio-comic consideration of how quickly present time becomes the past. Other poems celebrate the deep continuities between generations, and the presence, in our ‘fictions’, of the dead. Here are extremes of joy and sorrow, balanced in the subtle rhythms Anne Stevenson uses to keep her experience both close and clear. No poet writing today is more conscious of the sound of poems or of how meaning is implicated in sound.

Anne Stevenson now lives in an ex-pit village near Durham, and many of these poems celebrate the stubborn life of northern England. At the core of the book, however, is the death of her friend and fellow poet, Frances Horovitz, for whom the much-admired ‘Willow Song’ was written. The book ends with an autobiographical satire based on Le Petit Testament of Francois Villon.”

The Crowded Sky: An Anthology of Flight from the Beginnings to the Age of the Guided Missile by Edited by Neville Duke & Edward Lanchbery (£34.00)Publisher: London: Cassell & Co. Ltd. — 1959Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a small tape repair at the foot of the lower panel to the join and further closed tears at the spine ends. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned with spotting to the blanks. Description: From the cover: “Man’s longing to fly is as old as history. The wish to escape from the earth and soar with the birds recurs in Biblical verse and ancient legend, but it was Leonardo da Vinci who first considered the practical problems involved. From da Vinci to Colonel Frank Everest, Jr. , ‘the fastest man alive’, who in 1956 flew the Bell X-2 rocket plane at nearly two thousand miles an hour, this anthology of prose and poetry takes in its stride every conceivable branch of aviation, including the first faltering experiments, and the heyday of the balloon and the airship (there is an absorbing description taken from Nevil Shute’s autobiography of the testing of the R. 100, whose sister ship the R. 101 went to her doom so soon afterwards). Beside Bleriot’s exciting story are con-temporary newspaper accounts of Britain’s first air meetings and early flying clubs, and all else which has gone to make up the panorama of aviation through the ages. The First World War brought the greatest single challenge to the improvement of the aeroplane, and is seen here from the points of view of both Allied and German air aces. But flying was still in its infancy, at a time when the officer in command of the aeroplane gave the signal to descend by means of a smack on his pilot’s helmet! From the first World War to the second, with its roll of immortal names, among them Guy Gibson, Pierre Clostermann and Cheshire, V. C.; and finally to peace and the age of jet aircraft. In a section entitled Wings of Peace the editors show that to some, flying is an escape from the cares of the earth and a retreat that gives spiritual solace. So we come up-to-date with today’s test pilot, exploring new regions of speed and altitude, and developing test flying into a skilled and complicated science.

Here is a book to be dipped into again and again for its tales of high adventure, of the incredible audacity of men battling against the eternal forces of nature, and of the progress of aviation from its humble beginnings to its present vast complexity.”

Another Republic: 17 European and South American Writers by Edited by Charles Simic & Mark Strand (£19.50)Publisher: Ecco Press — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0912946288]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned with light, occasional spotting to the leading edge. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank with a bookplate to the pastedown.Description: From the cover: “Another Republic is a gathering of the best European and South American poets and fabulists superbly trans lated by outstanding British and American writers. Ranging from such acknowledged masters as Henri Michaux and Francis Ponge to such unjustly neglected figures as Johannes Bobrowski and Fernando Pessoa, the anthology is audacious, inclusive, and unlike any other. The selections are ample enough to give the reader a clear idea of each poet’s vision and a comprehensive notion of what con temporary poetry is. Charles Simic and Mark Strand, two of America’s finest poets, have chosen wisely the writers who have most influenced the new generation of American poets, and have avoided making the predictable choices of over-anthologized poets whose reputations, the editors believe, are disproportionate to their influence.

By providing the reader with the foreign sources of what is most vital in American literature today, Simic and Strand have done an invaluable job. This is an anthology in which discoveries will be made, in which there are poems and fables that will astonish and delight. It is also an anthology which, because of its clearly polemical nature, will stimulate controversy. Another Republic will add richly to the fabric of ideas.”

Young Men's Gold by Daniel Mark Epstein (£19.50)Publisher: The Overlook Press — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0879510714]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper unevenly faded on both panels, sunned at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Young Men’s Gold is Epstein’s first book since winning the prestigious Prix de Rome. Here is a progression of sensuous love poems and dramatic lyrics culminating in the mythic narrative from which the book takes its title. In Young Men’s Gold a Civil War veteran tells the tragic story of his youthful wager with death, in a poetic voice that moves with Homeric swiftness and resonance.

Epstein has been critically noted for his formidable style, his ‘Browingesque interlocked harshness’, and his highly rhythmic, melodious verse. In a review of The Follies, published in 1977, The New Republic described the attraction of Epstein’s poems: ‘They are narratives, real stories, not the exploration of an interior reality that we have come to expect from many young poets’. The review went on to say that Epstein’s books are memorable. ‘They’re full of concrete detail, especially of place and appearance. The characters are apt to appear in your dreams, looking just the way Epstein describes them’.“

Hooker's Finest Fruits: A Selection of Paintings of Fruits by William Hooker (1779-1832) by Frederick A. Roach (£19.00)Publisher: London: The Herbert Press, in association with the Royal Horticultural Society — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1871569052]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Colour plates;

From the cover: “William Hooker, perhaps the greatest of all fruit illustrators, was both an artist and a gardener. His knowledge of fruits, especially, was remarkable and, in the early nineteenth century, the Horticultural Society of London commissioned him to paint and describe about 150 of the most attractive and interesting varieties then being cultivated. Some of the paintings reappeared in his own engravings, and reproductions in anthologies and calendars have since made many of them world famous. The original paintings are among the most prized possessions of the Royal Horticultural Society, and here for the first time nearly 100 of the best, including a few engravings, have been brought together and published in a single volume. Faithfully reproduced in full colour almost to the original size, they portray with botanical accuracy and great beauty a magnificent assortment of favourite fruits — plums, apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, cherries, mulberries, nectarines and many more. Several varieties are no longer widely cultivated, which adds to the charm, fascination and horticultural importance of Hooker’s exquisite work.

A descriptive text by the botanical scholar and gardener Frederick Roach traces the origins and history of each fruit and discusses its horticulture and influence on modern varieties, and William T. Stearn contributes a stimulating introduction to the life and work of William Hooker.”

There were Centuries of Horror, Ghost Stories, Western Stories, Girls’ Stories, Boys’ Stories, Popular Romances, Sea Stories and Creepy Stories. But the most successful was A Century of Humour, selected by P. G. Wodehouse. Indeed, so successful was it that A Second Century of Humour swiftly followed. The Illustrated Treasury of Australian Verse by Beatrice Davis (£14.50)Publisher: Nelson — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0170064077]Condition: Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with a little wear to the dust wrapper as a result. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Top corner of the last few leaves slightly damp-wrinkled. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise and not an unpleasant copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “THIS SELECTION of popular verse speaks with the voice of Australia, from the convict era to the present day. It is a book to give pleasure to all lovers of verse; to recall the old favourites nostalgically remembered; and to open new doors by introducing the modern poets who speak of our world today.

In harmony with the poems, an inspired selection of paintings, drawings and photographs complement the poets’ visions and help to evoke atmosphere, time and place1.

‘Click Go the Shears’, The Wild Colonial Boy’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’, ‘The Man from Snowy River’ — the ballads with their enduring charm take first place in the book as they do in the hearts of many Australians young and old.

Love of country and the beauty of the Australian landscape are celebrated in poems like Henry Kendall’s ‘September in Australia’ and Dorothea Mackellar’s ‘My Country’ and in many later lyrics. Henry Lawson, Shaw Neilson, Mary Gilmore, are all given their place, as the selection moves on to Kenneth Slessor, Douglas Stewart and their contemporaries. Then comes the modern scene, with younger poets such as Thomas Shapcott, Bruce Dawe, and Les Murray.

Quality and clarity — as well as popular appeal — have governed the choice in compiling this lively anthology. In making her selection, Beatrice Davis has helped distil the Australian experience; she has done so in a way that can be shared by all Australians now, and for many years to come.”

From the cover: “First “published” in 1921, The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases was for

several years disseminated to doctors around the world in the form of loose-leaf carbon copies and photocopies. During the 1930s, the cannery and medical publisher Trimble Fisheries, Ltd. , published the Guide. Since then, London’s Chatto & Windus, Jolly Boy Publishing & Soap (Bombay), and Boojum Press (California) have had the honour of providing the Guide to thankful medical students and doctors. Today, Night Shade Books is proud to publish this special 83rd Commemorative Edition, complete with excerpts from prior editions.

From Freetown to Istanbul, Timbuktu to Ulan Bator, the Guide has proven its worth under less than ideal conditions. When a doctor lost in the Congo rainforests with only a few antibiotics and feral pygmy elephants for company cannot diagnose his odd spinal condition, he reaches for his handy copy of the Guide. When a family practice doctor cannot understand why a patient of 30 years with no history of mental defect suddenly begins to mimic inanimate objects, she turns to the reliable Lambshead Pocket Guide.”

Remnants of a prize-plate to the ffep.Description: With Photographs From the Times. In the National Anthologies series. London is many cities. It is the city of royalty and of the Cockney, of business kings and Chelsea artists, of the East End pub and the glamorous night life of Mayfair, of roaring streets and peaceful parks. Its literature is rich, for many writers over many centuries have tried to set down in words the nobility, the gaiety, the activity, the courage, the beauty and pageantry of this great city. No one person could hope to succeed, but this anthology brings together much of the best that has been written about London, from the days of Chaucer, through Pepys, Addison and Dickens to contemporaries such as John Betjeman and Norman Collins.Notes: Jacket designed by Gordon F. Favourite Australian Poems by Various (£13.00)Publisher: Child & Associates — 1987Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 086777052X]Condition: Very Good. Light knock to the foot of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “At some time in our lives most of us have come in contact with our heritage of Australian bush verse. Our blood has stirred to the urgent rhythm of a Paterson poem; our hearts have opened to Lawsori’s interpretation of bush life; and we’ve laughed along with C. J, Dennis and John O’Brien.

Favourite Australian Poems is a miniature treasury of verse from these writers and others of similar stature. The poems included all reflect the poets’ love of the Australian bush — its savagery, its harshness, and its contrasting beauty and splendour — and also the poets’ feelings for the people who lived and worked in the bush.

Beautifully illustrated with Ron Driscoll’s subtle and evocative pencil drawings, Favourite Australian Poems will prove a valued addition to the shelves of those who treasure the works of our best loved Australian poets..”

The Oxford Book of London by Paul Bailey (£12.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0192141929]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper lightly pulled at the foot of the upper panel and the spine otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: From the cover: “All great cities inspire great literature but no other city has so consistently stimulated the literary imagination as London. Over the centuries writers, poets, historians, artists, and simple observers have chronicled the life and growth of the capital from its humble beginnings to the teeming metropolis it is today. In his sparkling anthology Paul Bailey has captured the essence of its allure for visitors and inhabitants from the Middle Ages to the present day with wit, humour, and pathos. Among the many contributors are those whose evocations of the city have forever fixed it in the popular mind: Charles Dickens’s descriptions of fog-bound London streets, the bustle and hustle of the Victorian city; Ben Jonson s satires on London low-life; William Wordsworth rhapsodizing on the view from Westminster Bridge; George Bernard Shaw’s archetypal cockney, Eliza Doolittle… Less well known but equally vivid are descriptions of the down-and-out and the aristocrat, of the museums, theatres, galleries and churches, the restaurants and pubs, the parks and institutions, the topography of London mapped out in unforgettable verse and prose. The great set pieces — Daniel Defoe’s description of the Plague year, John Evelyn’s and Samuel Pepys’s daily records of the Great Fire — are among several other eye-witness accounts of coronations and funerals, unequalled in their immediacy. The bemusement of foreign visitors, the joys and horrors of London buses and the London Underground, the sprawl of the suburbs and the excitement of the City, all add to the dazzling panorama. There could be no better introduction, and no better tribute to this fascinating city than The Oxford Book of London.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Black boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. A Sudden Line: An Anthology of Modern Verse by Roger Armstrong; Isobel Armstrong; (£12.00)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1976Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0198361084]Condition: Very Good. Edges of wraps a little rubbed otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “In certain respects A Sudden Line has much in common with our earlier anthology, Every Man Will Shout. It has the same structure — three sections with progressively broadening themes — and the same scheme, based on similarities or contrasts in mood, subject and style, for the arrangement of poems. The material is again drawn from a very wide area and includes translations as well as poems from English-speaking countries. The emphasis is on work that has a direct appeal and the capacity for illuminating the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of young people. The relationship between poetry appreciation and poetry writing is reinforced by another selection of poems by students, whose reactions, as before, decided which poems were finally included and which were left out.”Notes: Size: 8½" x 6½". 87 pages. In A Fugitive Season: A Sequence of Poems by Robert Dana (£11.50)Publisher: The Ohio University Press — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0804008043]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine and onto the margins of the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “In a Fugitive Season is the long-awaited sixth volume of poetry by Robert Dana.

The poems in this collection are arranged in a sequence which explores the intensities, confusions, sudden insights brought on by the conflicts of passion and the pain of consciousness. The sequence forms a kind of love story, a tragi-comedy which plays itself out against a real world of power, poverty, and politics. While not so tightly bound to one another that they cannot be read separately, these poems nevertheless form an interwoven whole with recurrent figures and motifs.

In this volume, Dana shows that at the heart of all meaning is silence. The poems emerge from that silence, they struggle to create themselves, to overcome the reticence of meaning. Sometimes the language twists into grotesqueness or obscurity. At other times, it breaks into new formalities of speech, giving off fresh light.

In these poems, Robert Dana once again displays his mastery of language and imagery, his acuteness of observation and richness of invention, a precision and fullness of line, and an ear for music, that are breath-takingly fine.”
