From the cover: “From the author of the internationally acclaimed The Day After Tomorrow comes a thriller of equal complexity, daring action and chilling credibility.

In Italy the Cardinal Vicar of Rome is assassinated during a celebration for the Pope’s birthday.

In Los Angeles Harry Addison, a highly successful entertainment lawyer, finds a desperate message on his telephone answering machine from his long-estranged brother, Daniel, a priest in the Vatican.

Hours later a tourist bus on which Father Daniel is travelling explodes on the road to Assisi.

Arriving in Italy to claim his brother’s body, Harry is abruptly plunged into a Kafka-esque nightmare of deception and terror. Learning that his brother is the prime suspect in the assassination of the Cardinal Vicar, he soon suspects that his brother may have survived the bus explosion and still be alive, but before he can confirm his suspicions he is himself framed for the murder of an Italian policeman.

On the run from the authorities and at the same time desperately searching for Father Daniel, Harry discovers someone else is looking for his brother as well — the infamous international terrorist and maniacal killer, Thomas Kind. Pursued and alone, Harry finds himself at the centre of a monstrous conspiracy spun from the very heart of the Vatican, where men of God are using the devil’s hand to establish a new Holy Roman Empire in China for the 21st Century.”

Flying Scot by Ian and Jenny Stark (£9.50)Publisher: Pelham — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0720717698]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Ian Stark is today one of Britain’s best known and most popular event riders. Fast and fearless over the cross country fences, he has earned a reputation as a rider of outstanding ability.

Until a few years ago Ian was comparatively unknown but all this changed when he competed at Badminton for the first time in 1984. He finished with his two horses in third and sixth positions. On that occasion he rode what to date are probably his two best known horses — Oxford Blue and Sir Wattie.

Ian Stark grew up in the Scottish Border country and came from a completely non-horsey background. It was not until he was ten that he first rode at a local riding school but from then on he spent every spare moment with horses.

For many years he worked in a local office as well as managing his horses and competing. In 1982 Ian decided to take the bold decision to give up his job and to concentrate full time on horses. This decision was proved correct the following year when Ian won Bramham on Sir Wattie.

The financial pressure was taken off him when be became sponsored by Edinburgh Woollen Mill and since then he has gone on to win a silver team medal at the Los Angeles Olympics, won Badminton, been a member of the British team which won a gold medal in the World Championships at Gawler and was individual silver medallist at the 1987 European Championships.

Flying Scot has been written by Ian and Jenny Stark together and provides a fascinating insight to the world of top class eventing.”

Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy.Description: From the cover: “Los Angeles Times reporter Eve Diamond has spent the day at LAX shadowing a U.S. Customs Supervisor who’s got his eye on an incoming flight from Beijing via Seoul and Tokyo, The flight’s packed with the usual mass of humanity, ranging from the elegant Asian woman in the raspberry silk suit who emerges from first class carrying a tired toddler, to the scruffy students who have spent the long flight in economy,

Suddenly, shots ring out. Three people are dead, including the silk-clad woman. The man who was booked on the flight as the dead woman’s husband is missing. And the sad little toddler is left behind.

Who is this child? Her passport says she’s Japanese, but she doesn’t seem to understand the language. Was the dead woman really her mother? Why has the child made five transpacific flights in one year? And why do Customs and Immigration whisk her immediately into hiding?

Eve knows she must uncover the answers, even though it means putting herself at risk. Her search takes her from LA.’s sleazy hotels and cybercafés to the upscale milieu of trendy restaurants and high-powered human-rights lawyers, Nothing is quite what it appears to be, and nobody seems to want Eve to find the child.

Last Lullaby is a richly nuanced crime novel from a superbly gifted author who asks important questions and never settles for the superficial answer, Her powerful prose and passion for her native city shine through on every page.”

The Great American Bus Ride by Irma Kurtz (£7.00)Publisher: Fourth Estate — 1994Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1857021851]Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “After more than thirty years as an expatriate, Irma Kurtz gave in to her growing curiosity about her American roots and set off on a grand adventure to explore ‘the most baffling of all places’ — by Greyhound bus. Taking only the barest necessities for travel, she entered the vast network of America’s bus routes and a seething, fleeting world of brief encounters and changing landscapes. During the great loops of her journey back and forth across the continent, Kurtz was as fascinated by the people thrown up at random on each bus as by the places flashing by outside the window. She creates a vivid and highly entertaining portrait of America reflected in the hundreds of characters she observes from the close quarters of the bus. Feeling herself becoming ‘invisible’ as she passes into middle age, she senses a wonderful new freedom to watch and record other people. This is America caught unawares, in the no-man’s-land between bus stations: a more truthful picture of it than we have come to expect, from a woman looking coolly at the truth about herself.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 314 pages. Edges of the textblock lightly tanned.Description: From the cover: “From the author of the internationally acclaimed The Day After Tomorrow comes a thriller of equal complexity, daring action and chilling credibility.

A novel by Richard Osborne based on a story by Peter M. Lenkov and Robert Reneau and a screenplay by Daniel Waters and Robert Reneau and Peter M. Lenkov. From the cover: “John Spartan is the Demolition Man, the toughest cop in Los Angeles. Simon Phoenix is a ruthless psychopath, king of an inner-city wasteland ruled by fear. Pit them against each other and you’ve got a recipe for destruction…

It first happened in 1997, during the third wave of city-wide riots in Los Angeles. Spartan took Phoenix prisoner by breaking every rule in the book — and ended up in cryo-prison alongside his sworn enemy. Sentenced to seventy years’ sub-zero ‘rehabilitation’, Spartan joins Phoenix in a frozen cryogenic sleep… Then in 2032 Phoenix escapes from the prison, exploding on to the peaceful streets of the rebuilt city — new San Angeles – with unstoppable fury. After Phoenix commits a terrifying series of killings, the Demolition Man is freed from the CryoPenitentiary and released to face his arch-enemy, this time in a strange new world.

And both Spartan and Phoenix know that the future isn’t big enough for the two of them…”

Teacher Man by Frank Mccourt (£5.50)Publisher: HarperPerennial — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9780007173990]Condition: Very Good.Description: From the cover: “From the Pulitzer Prize-winning, bestselling author of Angela’s Ashes and‘Tis, a wonderfully engaging and appealing book about teaching and storytelling, the subjects closest to Frank McCourt’s heart…

Since the publication of Angela’s Ashes nearly a decade ago, Frank McCourt has become one of literature’s unlikeliest superstars. He is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. More than four million copies of Angela’s Ashes are now in print; its sequel, ‘Tis, has sold more than two million copies; and the books have been published in more than twenty countries and languages.

In Teacher Man Frank turns his attention to the subject that he most often taljcs about in his lectures — teaching: why it’s so important, why it’s so undervalued. He describes his own coming of age — as a teacher, a storyteller and, ultimately, a writer. He is alternately humble and mischievous, down-trodden and rebellious. He instinctively identifies with the underdog; his sympathies lie more with students than administrators. It takes him almost fifteen years to find his voice in the classroom, but what’s clear in the thrilling pages of Teacher Man is that from the beginning he seized and held his students’ attention by telling them memorable stories.

With all the wit, charm, irreverence, and poignancy that made Angela’s Ashes and ‘Tis so universally beloved, Frank McCourt tells his most exhilarating story yet — how he became a writer.”
