Ninety Degrees North — The Quest for the North Pole by Fergus Fleming (£12.50)Publisher: Granta — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1862074496]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “What was the North Pole? Was it an open sea, a volcano or the Garden of Eden? Was it a portal to new worlds within the globe or an undiscovered continent containing a race of alien beings? Or was it simply a wilderness of ice? In the mid-nineteenth century, the world decided it was time to find out.

America led the field. Commanders such as Kane, Hayes and Hall, battled sickness, shipwreck and starvation to reach the top of the world. So terrible was one voyage that the crew poisoned their captain rather than, continue north — only to become marooned on a drifting floe for nine months. Other nations followed: Germany, newly united and eager for its place in the ice; Austria-Hungary, decrepit but still capable of discovery; and Britain, whose sledgers reached a farthest north in 1876 before being driven back by scurvy.

Where governments failed, individuals took up the challenge. Norwegian skiers, Swedish balloonists, Italian aristocrats, tweedy British amateurs and global press barons, tried and failed in heroic succession. Finally came Robert Peary, a grim obsessive who claimed to have reached the Pole in 1909 — but who almost certainly did not. It was a joint Italian-Norwegian team, led by Roald Amundsen, who first saw the North Pole (from a zeppelin) in 1926 and, twenty-two years later, a party of Cold War Russians who first set foot on it.

Drawing on unpublished archives and long-forgotten journals, Fleming tells the story of the North Pole with consummate craftsmanship and wit. Ninety Degrees North is a riveting saga of humankind’s search for the ultimate goal.”

Introducing Jewelry Making by John Crawford (£11.50)Publisher: B. T. Batsford — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0713424052]Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. DJ slightly ruffled at the edges. Price Clipped. Top edges of text block lightly spotted.Description: Illustrated with B&W photographs. This book shows that striking jewellery can be made with limited materials and tools at slight expense, and that the process is well suited to the craft activities of schools and colleges, just as it may be rewardingly pursued by creative amateurs. The author is concerned with basic materials and tools, and simple methods of working, and with the kind of jewellery which they can produce: a Celtic brooch, an etched ring, a wire bracelet, a soldered pendant, etc. As well as the traditional materials, this book shows that other materials such as seeds, wood, ivory, bone, shells and semi – precious stones-can also be used, particularly in classes for young people. The illustrations prove that jewellery produced by students and amateurs can be more personal, and very often more beautiful, than the costly commercial products.Notes: Size: 8" x 8". 111 pages. The New English Vineyard For Gardens of Any Size: A Practical Guide to Growing Vines and Making Wine in Britain & Ireland, With a Gazetteer of British Vineyards and Their Wines by Joanna Smith (£10.50)Publisher: Sidgwick & Jackson — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0283985194]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A small sticker has been removed that bridged the front flap and the front pastedown, scrape to the pastedown as a result. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. A pleasant copy otherwise.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Over the past five years there has been a revolution in vine-growing in Great Britain. This book is the first to examine the new methods used in vineyards large and small. Today there is a remarkable and exciting revival in the wines of Britain and Ireland. Hundreds of thousands of vines are sold every year to the general public; more than one million bottles were sold in 1978; commercial and private vineyards are being planted; English wine is being produced in quantity and exported to countries famous for their own wines.

The New English Vineyard looks at every aspect of this new pursuit. Joanna Smith explains in a practical, straightforward way how to plan, plant and harvest a vineyard, however small or large it may be. There is detailed information on improved vine varieties, sources of supply, cultivation methods, vineyards to visit, wines to try and how to make wine from your own grapes. While researching the subject the author visited vine-growers all over the country, and their experiences are related to encourage and inform all who are interested in viticulture, including the novice.

For wine lovers who do not feel the urge to have their own vineyard, there is a complete up-to-date guide to the wines and vineyards of the British Isles.”

Fiat 128 1969-72 Autobook: Workshop Manual for Fiat 128 1969-72 by Kenneth Ball (£9.50)Publisher: Autopress — 1972Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 0851473180]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Boards and spine a little dulled and soiled. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Slight oiliness to parts of the text but a usuable manual all the same.Description: Illustrated with line drawings. From the cover: “This do-it-yourself Workshop Manual has been specially written for the owner who wishes to maintain his car in first class condition and to carry out his own servicing and repairs. Considerable savings on garage charges can be made, and one can drive in safety and confidence knowing the work has been done properly.

Comprehensive step-by-step instructions and illustrations are given on all dismantling, overhauling and assembling operations. Certain assemblies require the use of expensive special tools, the purchase of which would be unjustified. In these cases information is included but the reader is recommended to hand the unit to the agent for attention.

Throughout the Manual hints and tips are included which will be found invaluable, and there is an easy to follow fault diagnosis at the end of each chapter.

Whilst every care has been taken to ensure correctness of information it is obviously not possible to guarantee complete freedom from errors or to accept liability arising from such errors or omissions.

Instructions may refer to the right-hand or left-hand sides of the vehicle or the components. These are the same as the right-hand or left-hand of an observer standing behind the car and looking forward.”

Garden Club by Arthur Taylor (£9.50)Publisher: Sidgwick & Jackson — 1993Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0283061537]Condition: Very Good. Wrappers very slightly dog-eared with a crease to the bottom corner of the upper wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “GARDEN CLUB, made by HTV (West) and transmitted by Channel Four Television on Friday nights, reaches the parts that other television gardening programmes don’t reach.

The secret of the series’ phenomenal rise to success lies in the combination of practical and seasonal advice with the clubby atmosphere generated by its travels up and down the country, talking to ordinary but gifted gardeners about their own specialities, tips and problems. Hosted by Roy Lancaster and his team, the programmes combine the expertise of professionals and amateurs and offer a fascinating array of private gardens budding with imagination and talent, from the wildflower garden in deepest suburbia to a coalminer’s exotic blooms in the valleys of Wales.

The Garden Club book loosely follows the series, in style and content, through its first two years of transmission, gathering advice from the participants from all parts of Britain through the gardening year. It will form an invaluable almanac of advice, inspiration and wisdom from some of the most creative and talented gardeners in Britain today.”

Group Film Making by Robert Ferguson (£9.50)Publisher: Studio Vista — 1972Binding: Paperback Condition: Very Good. Wrappers slightly tanned otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: 3rd (2nd paperback) printing. [First Published: 1969] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “Combining most other arts, film-making has become increasingly popular in recent years as an activity that offers a very wide variety of interests to a number of different people. Amateur and semi-professional groups now flourish in many parts of the world; and schools in particular have been quick to see the potential of an art form that fully involves more skills than drama and can provide even greater educational possibilities in its choice of subject matter. Interest generally has been stimulated by the growing availability of cheap equipment, the spreading of information and the wider circulation of classical and experimental films. Yet, until now, no book has appeared which has specifically dealt with group film-making considering all its aspects. Robert Ferguson provides this much needed practical introduction; he encourages groups to explore and discover their own talents and limitations through constant experiment with film-exercises. He encourages the all round film-maker who is versed in the language of film rather than the specialist in one field. He covers all aspects of editing, script-writing, shooting, directing and acting in detail. There is advice on lighting, sound synchronization, effects, how to choose a subject as well as how to present convincing reality whether in documentary, fiction, fantasy film or simple incident. Advice on semi-professional techniques are included where these apply to specific films. The book is illustrated throughout from both amateur and commercial films and there is a full section on technical equipment. It is an ideal guide for those seeking basic information on the techniques of film-making.”

Ornamental Conifers by Victor Chaudun (£8.50)Publisher: Crosby Lockwood & Son — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with nicks at the head and tail of the spine. Leans. Edges of the textblock heavily spotted. Text bright and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “This new addition to the French series in which have already appeared Cacti, Succulent Plants and Indoor Plants provides another book on a specialised subject aiming at the provision of sound cultural notes, description of recommended species, the whole arranged to give the maximum practical advice to professionals and amateurs in easy form. Gardeners will be surprised by the pleasing effects to be gained with conifers and with the help of the excellent colour and monochrome illustrations will discover the best methods of obtaining them.

By choosing only those ornamental conifers which can be grown in Europe and by condensing within the limits of this book all that need be known in order to grow the plants well, a useful and practical work has resulted. After a quick look at the classification and the distribution of conifers in the world, so as to understand their cultural requirements better, the subject is developed in more detail for the benefit of the professional. As a guide to choice there follow lists, according to position or purpose, of species best adapted to each situation.

The larger part of the work is devoted to the description of the genera, species and varieties with, as far as possible, the determining characters which make it possible in each case to unravel the errors in nomenclature frequently found in many gardens. The plants are arranged alphabetically and after the scientific name, is given the common name, where such exists without possibility of confusion, as well as (when thought necessary) notes on the introduction to Europe, the decorative value and the particular cultural requirements.

The magnificent illustrations in full colour and black and white will give the reader a good idea of the diversity of forms and colours found among the conifers, the foundation of all decoration in gardens, large or small.”
