British Battleships of World War Two: The Development and Technical History of the Royal Navy's Battleships and Battlecruisers from 1911 to 1946 by Alan Raven & John Roberts (£192.00)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0853681414]Condition: Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Leans. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: Howe and Queen Elizabeth at sea in December 1944 by John Roberts. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates [4]; Diagrams; Tables; Fold-Out Maps;

From the cover: “This large and lavishly-illustrated volume presents a comprehensive account of the design and construction of the British battleships that served in the Second World War — from the Queen Elizabeth class to Vanguard. Much of the information contained in this book, which is the result of exhaustive research conducted over many years, is published for the first time, for only recently have official documents of the period been made available to the public. British Battleships of World War Two is therefore unique in making available the full story of the design and construction of every battleship and battlecruiser class of the period as first built, together with all details of the various refits and reconstructions that each vessel underwent during its service life. The contents also include a comprehensive review of developments in weapons, gunnery, fire-control, radar, protection and propulsion, taking in every aspect of battleship design and usage; and there are sections devoted to the actions involving British battleships during the Second World War, and to comparisons between the British battleships and their counterparts in other navies.

Complementing the text are some three hundred photographs, which in themselves constitute a history of the vessels. These are supplemented by numerous superb specially-drawn sets of plans and elevations — fully detailed and based on the official builders’ plans — comprising over three hundred individual drawings. They depict the ships not only in their “as built” configurations, but show also the many modifications and alterations carried out during their careers. British Battleships of World War Two is a magnificent volume that takes its place as the definitive work of reference on the subject.”

The Fleet in the First World War Volume 1: Operations of the Russian Fleet by Edited by N. B. Pavlovich (£86.00)Publisher: New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta & New York: Amerind Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd. — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little dulled at the panels and faded at the spine. Boards and spine dulled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Publishing date unstated, dated from references. Translation of Flot v Pervoi Mirovoi Voine published by Voennoe Izdatel’stvo, Ministry of Defence, USSR, Moscow, 1964. Illustrated by way of: Maps; Tables; Fold-Out Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “Among the many works on the First World War there has been no comprehensive account of the Russian navy’s part in that epic clash of the great powers. This gap is now filled by the present volume, which takes its place as the authoritative record of the Russian fleet’s day-by-day contribution to the war at sea from 1914 through 1917, when the revolutionary Bolshevik government took Russia out of what it saw as a purely imperialistic confrontation.

The story of the tortuously slow growth of the tsarist navy is told against the background of war preparations by Germany, France and England. We learn that through the vision and persistence of a few leaders Russia’s posture both on land, at sea and in the air at the outbreak of the war could inspire a measure of confidence.

The deeds of the Russian navy are recounted on the basis of the three theatres where it operated: the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the White Sea and adjoining coastal waters. The sections under these three heads give a year-by-year account of the fighting at sea against the background of the general progress of hostilities, particularly on the land front. The account concludes with the overthrow of the Tsar, the brief transition of Bolshevik rule, and the upheaval these developments produced in the Russian navy, which played a not inconsiderable part in hastening the process.”

The Thatcher Era and Its Legacy by Peter Riddell (£48.00)Publisher: Blackwell — 1991Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0631182683]Condition: Good. Light reading creases to the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: First in this edition. [First: The Thatcher Decade, 1991] Jacket illustration: Mrs Thatcher leaving No. 10 for Buckingham Palace after resigning.

From the cover: “In 1989, in The Thatcher Decade, Peter Riddell provided the most wide-ranging and accessible analysis to date of the impact of Mrs. Thatcher’s government on the British economy and society in the 1980s. Now, following Margaret Thatcher’s sudden and dramatic departure from office in November 1990, he extends his classic account of the Thatcher years to include an assessment of her legacy and its consequences for Britain in the next decade.

Margaret Thatcher, one of the most remarkable of all British prime ministers, presided over a period of far-reaching change in Britain’s economy, industrial structure, labour market, society and place in the world. Looking beyond the personality of Mrs. Thatcher, Peter Riddell discusses how far these changes reflected the actions of the government, intended or unintended, rather than the influence of broader, longer-term trends common to other industrialized countries. Was there, in short, a Thatcher revolution? What are the consequences of her legacy?

The Thatcher Era is essential reading for all those interested in current politics.”

with the Carriers in Korea: The Fleet Air Arm Story 1950-1953 by John R. P. Lansdown (£44.00)Publisher: Crécy Publishing — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0947554645]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper front flap slightly creased otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Although within living memory of those who took part, and their families, the Korean war has been largely neglected in publishing. There have been only a small number of books available and these have tended to detail the actions of the British, Commonwealth and US Armies. The fact that the British and Commonwealth navies, and particularly the Fleet Air Arm, were heavily involved has been largely overlooked.

This imbalance has at last been redressed by an author who, as a Lt. Commander, served with the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) in Korea on board the aircraft carrier HMS Glory. In this book, John Lansdown has produced the definitive record of this era, including a historical perspective of the period leading up to the conflict and a full and detailed history of sea and air operations in South East Asia from 1950-1953. All Royal Navy and United States Navy ships involved in the conflict are mentioned, and all the carriers which saw action are detailed in the text. This vital work of reference is enlivened by a stunning photographic content and extracts from the Squadron Diaries and Line Books, covering every day that aircraft flew into battle. A unique and absorbing book.”

Nelson's Ships: A History of the Vessels in Which He Served 1771 - 1805 by Peter Goodwin (£42.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851777422]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight rippling to the foot of the leaves, possibly caused by slight damp at some time, but inoffensive. Description: Jacket illustration: Nelson's Flagships at Anchor, 1807 by Nicholas Pocock. This is a composite image of Nelson's flagships at the Spithead anchorage painted in 1807. From left to right, Agamemnon, Vanguard (showing her broadside), stern view of Elephant flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the Blue, Captain and then Victory firing a salute and flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the White. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Much has been written about Nelson, the man and his successful career from midshipman to great commander, culminating with his glorious death at the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805. Added to this, considerable literary works have been published about his flagship at that famous battle, HMS Victory, but little has been written about the other vessels in which he served throughout his career, providing him with experience vital to his professional and personal development.

Beginning with HMS Raisonnable, the 3rd Rate 64-gun ship in which Nelson began his naval career at the start of 1771, Nelson’s Ships provides a service history of the 25 Royal Navy vessels in which Nelson served. All the famous ships-of-the-line are included: Agamemnon, the vessel of which he assumed command in 1793, Captain, which he commanded at Cape St. Vincent, Vanguard, flagship at the Nile and of course Victory. For the first time many of the smaller ships Nelson served in such as Carcass, Badger and La Minerve, are examined. A final chapter is devoted to the 12 ships in which Nelson served only for a very brief period of time.

A comprehensive background to each vessel is provided examining the design, construction and armament. A full service history then follows including the actions in which the ship participated, any modifications that were made, refit histories and costs, a complete list of the commanding officers of the ship and finally the ship’s ultimate fate. Numerous illustrations, superb plans and draughts specially drawn by the author, and a lavish colour artwork section complements the text.

The incidents that occurred whilst Nelson was on board each ship reveal an abridged version of his career and offer both the enthusiast and general reader an insight into the man himself. Utilising the ships’ logs allows the work to examine many important issues in Nelson’s navy such as victualling and health, discipline and punishment, ship handling and repair thus providing a fascinating insight into the reality of life at sea and disproving many of the myths surrounding the Georgian navy. Fully researched and developed by one of the most well known and respected Nelson historians, Nelson’s Ships is an invaluable work for both the academic and enthusiast alike.”

The Barrier and the Javelin: Japanese and Allied Strategies, February-June, 1942 by H. P. Willmott (£36.00)Publisher: Annapolis: Naval Institute Press — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0870210920]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Distributors sticker covers publisher colophon on the title page. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “H. P. Willmott’s perceptive analysis of Japanese and Allied strategies in the Pacific war has set new standards for World War Two historians. The scope and depth of the research he did for the first book of his Pacific trilogy, Empires in the Balance, have earned him a reputation as a major chronicler of the period. With this second volume, Willmott continues to offer significant new material and interpretations that are certain to warrant further study.

The Barrier and the Javelin begins with a thoughtful assessment of the critical situation in which Japan found herself in the spring of 1942. Even by that early stage of the Pacific war, the fundamental weakness of the Japanese effort was evident. Japan had gone to war with little more than a five-month plan of campaign and the conviction that she could not be defeated by enemies who were her moral inferiors. Her intention had been to conquer territories essential to her economic survival and then fight a defensive war that would exhaust her enemies and lead them to a negotiated settlement. By the spring Japan’s leaders were becoming uncom-fortably aware that their enemies would not negotiate and that they themselves lacked the plans, and perhaps the means, to make them change their minds. Willmott sets out the arguments over strategy that plagued the Japanese naval command as it tried to formulate a coherent response to this potentially disastrous situation. In so doing he suggests that the weaknesses of the command’s decision-making process kept the Japanese from taking the one course of action that could have changed the outcome of the war, and were responsible for the ill-considered plan of campaign that began to fall apart in the Coral Sea in May’and ended in disaster four weeks later at Midway.

The book, however, is not confined to an examination of Japanese policymaking. Just as Empires in the Balance provides & critical appraisal of the moves made by all the combatants during the first five months of the war, so The Barrier and the Javelin places the Allied part of the February-June 1942 record alongside that of the Japanese. In doing so, it examines why the British and their dominions were totally unable to put together a proper Pacific policy in the opening phase of the war, and why the Americans came to accept a commitment to fight in the southwest Pacific when this area had barely figured in their prewar calculations. American intelligence gathering — Operation Magic — and its effect on the progress of the war are also described in full.

Willmott follows his assessment of the Allied situation with a detailed analysis of the battle of the Coral Sea and the action off Midway, which at last places these battles in their proper context. Debunking long-held beliefs about the com-parative strengths of the Japanese and Allied forces, he contends that in both battles the weaker fleet was defeated, not victorious as most accounts suggest. He further argues that if Japan was indeed fated to lose the war, then her defeat at Midway can hardly be regarded as the decisive battle so many claim it to be. Inevitability and decisiveness, he points out, are mutually exclusive terms.

Many readers will find Willmott’s treatment of the Japanese side of the battle of Midway an intriguing alternative to other books on the subject. He reveals some important new information that finally explains the inconsistencies found in previous accounts. His condemnation of Admiral Yama-moto’s inept handling of the entire fiasco is unusually clear and hard-hitting.

This view of the flow of events in the first half of 1942 provides one of the most comprehensive, balanced and readable studies of the period ever written. It will be of enduring interest to general readers as well as professional historians and students of World War Two.”

Obsession: Psychic Forces and Evil in the Causation of Disease by Arthur Guirdham (£19.00)Publisher: London: Neville Spearman — 1972Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0854352716]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “This book is a new approach to the understanding of neurotic disease. In the past the latter has been the subject of much heavy theorising. To the author, a consultant psychiatrist of forty years standing, the explanation is more fundamental and essentially simpler. Many of those who reveal obsessional symptoms, which are best exemplified by the pointless repetition of simple actions like turning off bath taps, are suffering from repression of their psychic gifts.

Obsessional states are a direct protective reflex following the perception of evil. This is first revealed in the night terrors and involuntary tics of childhood. The victims of obsessional states are often markedly psychic. Many are clairvoyant and telepathic. Their obsessional tendencies are related to the repression of these gifts. A number have far memory back to, and preceding, birth.

There are two central themes in this book. The first is that the obsessional patient is two persons in one, that he is, on the one hand, a mystic with psychic gifts and, on the other, an exponent of orthodoxy with ritualistic tendencies. The latter are a mask and an atonement for his psychic endowments. He combines in one personality the roles of persecuted heretic and inquisitor, of gifted mystic and repressive priest.

Dr Guirdham’s second major theme is that, in the obsessional, the battle between good and evil is being fought out at the conscious level. Each obsessional represents an armageddon in miniature. He reflects in his own soul the ultimate battle in the Cosmos between the forces of good and evil.”

The Buddhist Writings of Lafcadio Hearn by Edited by Kenneth Rexroth (£18.00)Publisher: Wildwood House — 1981Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0704504219]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently faded at the spine with light reading creases. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: First in this edition. [First: Houghton Mifflin, 1977] From the cover: “Lafcadio Hearn was born on the Greek island of Leucadia in 1850. After a career in journalism in the United States, Hearn travelled to Japan in 1890 to write articles about Japanese life for Harper’s Magazine. He remained there for the rest of his life, taking a Japanese wife (by whom he had three sons and a daughter) and assuming Japanese citizenship in 1895. He died in 1904, and was buried after Buddhist ceremonies in Zoshigaya cemetery in northern Tokyo. This collection of his writings on Buddhism was taken from the bulk of his writings by Kenneth Rexroth. The organization of the selections reflects Hearn’s chronological progress from a rendering of the simple tales and stories illustrative of the common folk’s beliefs in Buddhism to the more abstract philosophic doctrines of the Mahayana Buddhist sects in Japan. Of the many writers who have commented upon Buddhism in Japan, none has stood the test of time so well as Lafcadio Hearn.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). Seapower Ashore: 200 Years of Royal Navy Operations on Land by Edited by Captain Peter Hore (£16.50)Publisher: Chatham Publishing — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861761554]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs & maps. From the cover: “For most of the age when the Royal Navy dominated the world's oceans, it actually did much of its fighting ashore. From supporting the army during the Napoleonic Wars with its heavy guns, to shore bombardments such as at Acre in 1840 and Sweaborg during the Crimean War, to the landing of naval brigades of marines and bluejackets in Queen Victoria's myriad ‘little wars’, the nineteenth century saw the Royal Navy playing a major part in land warfare. This extended into the twentieth century, with the Royal Naval Division fighting on the Western Front in the First World War, the men of HMS Hood landing their ship's field gun in the ill-fated Norwegian Campaign of 1940, and, very recently, when the submarine HMS Splendid fired Britain's first Tomahawk cruise missiles at land targets in the former Yugoslavia in 1999. A group of eminent naval historians has been assembled to describe this vital element of the Royal Navy's role which has so often been overshadowed by the fleet actions of Nelson's time, and of the First and Second World Wars.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¾". Explanation and Power: The Control of Human Behaviour by Morse Peckham (£15.50)Publisher: The Seabury Press — 1979Binding: Paperback (Uncorrected Proof) Condition: Good. An adequate reading copy only. Gently faded at the spine with some soiling of the wraps. A slightly dog-eared copy. Cutting pasted to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Explanation and Power proposes a radical theory of meaning; that is, meaning as response. Meaning is not immanent in word or sign, natural or man-made. Human behaviour depends on interaction, and interaction depends upon the stabilization of the meanings of verbal and non-verbal signs. Ultimately meaning can be stabilized only by explanation and when explanation fails, by force.Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 297 pages. Japanese Naval Aces and Fighter Units in World War II by Ikuhito Hata & Yasuho Izawa (£14.50)Publisher: Shrewsbury: Airlife Publishing Ltd. — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1853101389]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “The Pacific War was an air war, yet, until now, Western readers have had little chance to learn about Japan’s naval fighter pilots and their World War II air groups. This English translation of a classic Japanese work finally lifts the cloak of anonymity that has hidden their identities from the West for so long. Within these pages the reader gains an intimate and unprecedented view of the men, their aircraft, and their victories and defeats.

Divided into three parts, the book opens with rare photos and brief descriptions of the principal Japanese naval aircraft. The second part offers concise histories of the air groups, including every carrier-and land-based fighter unit in the Imperial Navy — from the China Incident in the early 1930s to the end of the Pacific War in September 1945. Dates of organization and disbanding, key movements and action results, brief summaries of important battles, and anecdotes about leaders and aces are all provided. The third part captures Japan’s leading naval aces in photos and individual biographical sketches.

This translation — the only one available in English — is based on the revised and enlarged 1975 edition of Nihon Kaigun Sentoki-tai, the definitive work on the subject in Japan. To produce this unique record Ikuhiko Hata, an internationally known military historian, and his highly regarded researcher Yasuho Izawa spent years tracking down information and conducting interviews with surviving aces and the families of those killed in the war. Their Japanese perspective adds a significant new dimension to the annals of World War II.

Nearly 350 photographs of aces and aircraft — many new to this edition — supplement the text. Some 100 line-drawings of aircraft show unit markings and paint colours. To aid the Western reader this edition adds a section on Japanese naval terminology. Appendix tables chronicle naval fighter aces by record, pilots killed in action, pilots by training class, and major air battles. Indexes by name and unit and end maps of the entire Pacific theatre provide excellent references.”

The Fight For the Channel Ports: Calais to Brest 1940: A Study in Confusion by Michael Glover (£13.00)Publisher: Leo Cooper in association with Secker and Warburg — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0436182106]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “In the summer of 1940 all British attention was focused on the Deliverance of Dunkirk as the Expeditionary Force, its communications cut, fought its way back to the coast. But since the War historians have given little thought to the British troops, including the country’s only armoured division, who were trapped in France outside the Dunkirk perimeter. The Royal Navy eventually evacuated 144,171 men but more than 20,000 failed to return. This is the dramatic story of the last actions fought by the abandoned BEF troops who struggled down the Channel coast, selling their lives dearly in a desperate attempt to reach safety. A few incidents have been told before — the defence of Calais by the Greenjackets; the trapping of the Highland Division at St. Valery: yet the Battle Honours Amiens 1940 and Abbeville are as little known as they are rare, and Doullens was not rated as an Honour despite the handsome tribute paid by the enemy to the ill-armed, undertrained Territorials (12th Eastern Division) who defended it. Now their ordeal is told in full. This is a story of muddle and confusion redeemed only by the bravery of the fighting troops. A story in which all military actions were tempered by political considerations and in which Government policy demanded a show of solidarity with France, in the hope that the powerful French navy would continue to fight on the Allied side. Thus the abandoned BEF were beset with order and counter-order and, as a result of the lack of unified command, thousands of men were lost and vast amounts of desperately needed stores and equipment had to be destroyed or left to the enemy. It was a classic example of the way in which war should not be waged.”

The Lost Ships of Guadalcanal: Exploring the Ghost Fleet of the South Pacific by Robert D. Ballard with Rick Archbold (£12.50)Publisher: New York: Warner Books — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0446516368]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, more heavily to the top corners which are near frayed, which is sunned at the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “IRON BOTTOM SOUND… IT GETS ITS NAME FROM ALL the ships that sank there. From August to November of 1942 the tropical waters off the small island of Guadalcanal were the scene of some of the fiercest sea battles of World War II. Fifty years later, Robert Ballard, the man who discovered the Titanic and the Bismarck, took his exploration team to Guadalcanal. Their goal was not one ship but an entire naval battlefield. On board were some of the men who had served on those ships that now lay beneath Iron Bottom Sound. The memories of these survivors help tell a powerful, poignant story of men and ships and war.

The Lost Ships of Guadalcanal re-creates the whole story of the campaign that changed the course of the Pacific war. For all the fame of its air and land battles, Guadalcanal is also a compelling story of sailors and warships. In fact, more Americans died in Guadalcanal waters than on land. The terror and confusion of night naval action is conveyed here in gripping chapters that describe first the bitter American defeat in the Battle of Savo Island and then the struggle to eventual victory in the climactic Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. We then descend in Ballard’s submarine to view scenes of American, Australian, and Japanese ships lying together on the ocean floor, their guns still eerily pointing at each other.

With over 300 illustrations, this book has all the pictorial richness that helped make bestsellers of Robert Ballard’s two previous books, The Discovery of the Titanic and The Discovery of the Bismarck. Haunting pictures of the wrecks are paired with photographs of the ships in their prime; a spectacular full-page foldout reveals the USS Quincy and the Canberra, painted in accurate detail by maritime artist Ken Marschall. Full-colour maps and diagrams plus a host of paintings and present-day photographs help to both re-create this extraordinary chapter in the history of the Pacific war and convey the excitement of modern underwater exploration.”

Description: From the cover: “A man named Mohammed sits in a cafe in Vienna, about to propose a deal to a Colombian. Mohammed has a strong network of agents and sympathizers throughout Europe and the Middle East, and the Colombian has an equally strong drug network throughout America. What if they were to form an alliance, to combine all their assets and connections? The potential for profits would be enormous -and the potential for destruction unimaginable.

In the brave new world of terrorism — where anybody with a spare AK-47, a knowledge of kitchen chemistry or simply the will to die can become a player — the old rules no longer apply. No matter what new governmental organizations come into being, the only truly effective ones are those that are quick and agile, free of oversight and restrictions … and are outside the system. Way outside the system.

In a nondescript office building in suburban Maryland, the firm Hendly Associates does a profitable business in stocks, bonds and international currencies, but its true mission is quite different: to identify and locate terrorist threats, and then deal with them, in whatever manner necessary. Established with the knowledge of President John Patrick Ryan, ‘the campus’ is always on the lookout for promising new talent, its recruiters scattered throughout the armed forces and government agencies — and three men are about to cross its radar.

The first is Dominic Caruso, a rookie FBI agent barely a year out of Quantico, whose decisive actions resolve a particularly brutal kidnap/murder case. The second is Caruso’s brother, Brian, a Marine captain just back from his first combat in Afghanistan, and already a man to watch. And the third is their cousin… a young man named Jack Ryan. Jr.”

Zulu Vanquished: The Destruction of the Zulu Kingdom by Ron Lock & Peter Quantrill (£12.50)Publisher: Greenhill Books — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1853676608]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Jacket illustration: The Zulu attack having failed, mounted infantry and colonial horsemen pursue the beaten enemy. (Illustrated London News). Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 has become synonymous with Britain’s humiliating defeat at Isandlwana and the heroic defence of Rorke’s Drift. But these celebrated actions were only part of a campaign that lasted for more than six months and resulted in the Zulu kingdom’s destruction. Zulu Vanquished explores the events that not only led to the initial British defeat at Isandlwana but allowed Chelmsford the opportunity to launch his second invasion, which concluded with the eventual torching of the Zulu capital of oNdini on the Ulundi plain.

Founded on a wealth of first-hand accounts, some published for the first time, as well as the authors’ intimate knowledge of the history and terrain of Zululand, this book is a groundbreaking work that sheds light on the wider Anglo-Zulu conflict and will prove indispensable for scholars and enthusiasts alike.”

Red Duster, White Ensign: The Story of the Malta Convoys by Ian Cameron (£12.00)Publisher: London: Frederick Muller Limited — 1959Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a stain the length of the join of the lower panel affected the boards. Leans. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Pages gently tanned with scattered spotting throughout. Description: Illustrated by way of: Top edge red; Black & White Photographs; Silhouettes; Maps [3];

From the cover: “This book fills an important gap in the history of the Second World War, for the story of the convoys to Malta has never before been told. It is now accepted by British, German and Italian historians that Malta was the key to the Middle East; the task of the convoys which fought through with supplies to the “George Cross Island” was therefore of supreme importance.

Many of the true stories in this book are epics of the sea — outstanding examples of the courage and fine seamanship of the men of the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy. The author describes not only the thrilling incidents — the story of the Ohio and the Breconshire, for example — in all the principal convoys to Malta, but also the blockade runs made by individual merchantmen, and the attempts to re-provision the island by minelayer and submarine, as well as the aircraft-ferry operations, including those made by the U. S. aircraft-carrier Wasp.

But the fascination of this book is not confined to the accounts of the operations themselves, for the author takes us behind the scenes to disclose some startling differences of opinion over Malta among those responsible for the conduct of the war. While paying tribute to Sir Winston Churchill and many other high-ranking Naval officers, he is outspoken in his criticism of Chiefs of Staff who, as late as 1942, were demanding a withdrawal from “undefendable” Malta which, had it been carried out, could well have lost us the Middle East.

This book has been written with full Admiralty approval, and the author has been given access to unpublished and hitherto secret Naval records. A little bruised at head and tail with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly.Description: From the cover: “The Greater German Reich has finally been nuked to a standstill, Chinese Maoists still revolt against Lizard rule, Japan has atomic weapons, the Soviets are playing devious games under President Molotov, and the US has gained a foothold in space. There’s a soap-operatic tangle of plot strands, with established characters both human and alien meeting in ever-changing combinations, much blackmail and smuggling of ginger (to Lizards, a powerfully addictive drug), and flashes of everyday job-hunting, friendship and romance. Big questions loom: which country attacked the colony ships and must pay heavily for it? Where is the one nuclear weapon captured by Jews 20 years ago? Will the Lizards cut their losses by reducing Earth to radioactive wasteland? And just what is the US doing so secretly in the asteroid belt? Little jokes appear amid the suspense — for example, the Warren Commission has nothing to do with Kennedy’s assassination but is a Lizard team investigating the shocking actions of this world’s US President Warren”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Convoy!: Drama in Arctic Waters by Paul Kemp (£11.50)Publisher: Brockhampton — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1860199690]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight bow to the boards otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: First in this edition. [First: Arms & Armour, 1993] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Some of the most hard-fought naval actions of World War Two took place in the most northerly waters of the world — the Arctic Ocean. Ships progressively covered in ice, their crews steadfast in the bitter cold, battled through heavy seas, all the while under threat of attack from German submarines, aircraft and surface ships, as they braved the route from Britain to northern Russia.

The PQ/QP convoys began in late September 1941 and continued throughout the war. Despite pre-war ambivalence between Britain and Russia, the danger of the common enemy in Germany clearly dictated that all aid possible be provided — but the greatest challenge was yet again that of limited Allied naval resources being over-committed.

German forces were initially slow to react to the vulnerability of the regular, heavily laden convoys but quickly concentrated aircraft, submarines, destroyers and heavy ships in Norwegian bases. It was there, in her northern fiord lair, that Bismarck’s powerful sister-ship Tirpitz waited for the opportunity to intercept and prey upon the slow-moving convoys. Thus Britain was forced to retain large capital ship superiority close at hand to counter the threat of a heavy strike by these Kriegsmarine units.

Weather conditions made service on the PQ routes a constant battle to survive against the bitter wind, hard packed ice and sub-zero temperatures. Nevertheless, the supplies kept going through. And the cost to the Allies was high. For supplying the Russians with close on £500,000,000 worth of vital weapons, transport and ammunition, 18 warships and 104 merchant vessels were sunk. The materiel losses resulting from the debacle of Convoy PQ17 alone were the equivalent of a major land battle.

The Arctic convoys still exert a special fascination for the historian, and the exciting nature of the actions is well delivered in this new study by a popular naval writer. Paul Kemp sets the scene for the history of the convoys before a lively narrative covering their entire history. Highlights include a full section on PQ17 alone and a stirring account of the Battle of the North Cape.

Meticulously researched from original operational orders and reports, and including new Russian perspectives, this is an authoritative history as well as an entertaining narrative account of a fascinating period of naval history.”

Cricket Conversations by Peter Walker (£11.50)Publisher: Pelham — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0720710472]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edges of text block lightly tanned.Description: 2nd Impression. [First Edition: Same Year] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Cricketers whose actions on the field have made them household names remain shadowy figures in their private lives. The pressures of international cricket breed a natural suspicion of the media and it is rare that the shield ever falls. Peter Walker’s book, Cricket Conversations, manages to surmount this barrier. His own experience as a first-class cricketer with Glamorgan from 1954 to 1972 and his three Test caps for England put him on the inside of the tightly-knit group of men who play cricket as a profession. This collection of conversations between Walker and thirteen of the world’s finest players ranges from such topics as their personal lifestyles to critical analysis of their own and other cricketers’ techniques. Sir Garfield Sobers talks of his sense of inadequacy; Barry Richards on how he builds an innings; Glenn Turner remembers what it was like during the month of May when he became the only man since the war to score 1,000 runs. Tommy Cartwright, the supreme bowling technician, explains how to bowl at Boycott, Lloyd and Viv Richards. Mike Procter talks about the development of multi-racial cricket in South Africa and how he and others are helping to accelerate its arrival. Cricket Conversations explores new areas of cricket journalism and is superbly illustrated with photographs by Patrick Eagar. Mr Walker prefaces the conversations with a critical essay on each player drawing on personal anecdote and previously unrevealed information about the men who have already assured their places in cricket’s Valhalla.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by John Arlott. Trading Standards stamp to the first blank otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: 3rd edition. [First Edition: 1994] From the cover: “The purpose of this book is to give reasonably simple account of the law relating to the sale of goods. It is particularly designed for those students who do not spend a whole academic year on this subject. The emphasis is on those general concepts, such as passing of property and risk, which all students need to master, and on those problems, such as the sale of defective goods or of goods which do not belong to the seller, which are most important in practice. There is an analysis of the borderlines between sale of goods and allied contracts, such as hire purchase, hire, exchange and work and materials, the law of which is based on analogies drawn from sale of goods. There is also discussion in relation to defective goods, of criminal liability and tortious liability. This third edition deals with new cases decided since 1995; with the Sale of Goods (Amendment) Act 1995 and with the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 199 pages. The Heat of Battle: The 16th Battalion Durham Light Infantry the Italian Campaign 1943-1945 by Peter Hart (£11.50)Publisher: Barnsley: Leo Cooper — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0850526906]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Number 3 in the series. Contains: Black & white photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “This third volume in the Pen & Sword Regimental Actions series follows the 16th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry as they slog their way through Italy during the Second World War. After landing at Salerno in September 1943, they fought their way across the myriad ridges and rivers that criss-crossed Italy while facing some of the finest troops in the German Army. The long-suffering Durhams even rumoured that the Germans possessed an elite force of bulldozers to create new ridges to bar the way ahead! It was a long and bitter campaign which tested to the limits the inner resolve of every man from private to colonel before their eventual victory.

The Heat of Battle is oral history at its best. It is a gripping story in the actual voices of those lucky enough to have survived. These vivid and often moving personal accounts have been culled from thousands of hours of recorded interviews held by the Imperial War Museum.”

The Price of Admiralty: The Evolution of Naval Warfare by John Keegan (£11.50)Publisher: London, Sydney, Auckland & Johannesburg: Hutchinson — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. From the cover: “The conflicts Keegan has chosen begin with Trafalgar in 1805, a classic and well-documented example of a ship-of- the-line battle. Next he turns to Jutland, posing very different problems for commander and seaman-alike. Then to the Battle of Midway, where he examines the particular role played by the aircraft carrier, with its ‘two societies’, that of the ship itself and that of the ‘air group’ elite which supplied its raison d’être.

Finally he examines the Battle of the Atlantic, in which he recreates a picture both of everyday life and operational routine within the boat that saw the last great technical transformation of naval operations, and ultimately the most significant — the submarine. The book concludes with a survey of how naval warfare may be expected to evolve in the future — with surface navies disappearing altogether.”

Description: Jacket illustration: 87 Squadron, Lille, Spring 1940. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps [1];

From the cover: “Sixty years ago, Europe lay at Hitler’s feet. Britain faced its darkest hour — outnumbered and friendless as the German army continued its advance. Defeat or capitulation seemed inevitable. But instead a legend was bom.

Taking its readers on a breath-taking journey from open lifeboats in Atlantic gales to the cockpits of burning fighter-planes, and through cities devastated by the Blitz, Finest Hour recreates the terror, the tragedy and the triumph of the Battle of Britain.

This powerful account of the events of 1940, is told through the voices, diaries, letters and memoirs of the men and women who lived, loved, fought and died during this terrible yet inspiring year. These searing personal testimonies, taken from over a hundred original interviews, are combined with a fresh and often controversial account of the elaborate political intrigues and betrayals of the period — the Royal Navy assault on the French fleet and America’s secret plans to cope with Britain’s defeat.

Finest Hour blends original historical research with the experiences of ordinary people in desperate times. Cutting through the nostalgic haze, this book enables readers to experience something of a time — still within common living memory — when a nation’s darkest hour became its finest.”

Jack Russell Unleashed by Jack Russell (£10.50)Publisher: CollinsWillow — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 000218768X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the text block tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Jack Russell is one of the most colourful and eccentric characters in international cricket. Since making his wicket-keeping debut for England in 1988, Russell has taken well over 100 Test catches, including a world record eleven catches in a match, and has figured in a series of heroic rearguard actions with the bat, feats that have endeared him to cricket followers the world over.

But Russell is no ordinary cricketer. Thanks to his idiosyncratic batting style at the crease, his peculiar diet of twenty cups of tea a day and mountains of baked beans, and his love of drawing and painting, he has earned the reputation for being an oddity in the world of modern day cricket.

Undoubtedly a complex character, driven by forces even he cannot totally comprehend, Russell will reveal how he was inspired to take up the wicket-keeping gloves for his county Gloucestershire and to battle for his place behind the stumps for England.

Through all this he reflects on how his career was interrupted by personal tragedy — the death of his brother in 1986 and the depression that he suffered at the end of the West Indies tour in 1994 — and recalls the contrasting emotions of starting out in a struggling England side, followed almost eight years later by the elation over his match-saving performance in the Johannesburg Test during the winter tour of South Africa. He will also talk frankly about the characters he has encountered during almost a decade at the top: Alan Knott, Keith Fletcher, lan Botham, Mike Atherton, David Graveney, and Raymond Illingworth are just some who have influenced his career for good or ill.

Many feel that Russell has been shabbily treated by the England selectors, with the most recent rebuff occurring on the disappointing tour of Zimbabwe and New Zealand. His account of what happened during the winter is the first by an England player — and a typically honest assessment from a man who has established for himself a unique place in the hearts of England’s cricket supporters.”
