From the cover: “The Tihamah is the name given to the coastal strip of south-western Arabia which borders the Red Sea. Its culture and natural history owe as much to Africa and to the Indian Ocean basin as to the interior of Arabia, and it is this amalgam which gives the region its distinctive features.

This volume offers a collection of survey reports, supplemented by related papers, which outline the geology, flora, fauna, history, archaeology, architecture, music and ethnography of the North Yemen portion of the Tihamah, as it was surveyed in 1982 by the Tihamah Expedition.

The multi-disciplinary format draws a profile of the Tihamah which is broadly descriptive and accessible to the general reader, yet sufficiently detailed to provide considerable information to specialists.

Not since the Danish Expedition to Arabia in 1762 has the Tihamah been the subject of such a wide-ranging study, and the papers published here, assembling recent research, constitute the only monograph available on the region.

This symposium is illustrated from the work of the Expedition, artists, architects and others, whose hand-wrought observations have served to document various landforms, plants, animals, monuments, archaeological remains, vernacular structures, musical instruments and artefacts of the area.

In addition, short essays by Expedition members relate the field techniques used to record the music and to survey the wildlife, as well as to carry out the programmes of the artists, who were charged with the task of recording for science while making a contribution of the tradition of Orientalist art.

The book includes specialised glossaries, two maps and index.”
