From the cover: “For almost a hundred years readers and quoters of English poetry have delighted in FitzGerald’s translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in spite of scholars pointing out how far his translations departed from the original Persian and in spite of the disputed authorship of many of the quatrains. A short time ago A. J. Arberry, Professor of Arabic at Cambridge University, examined two recently discovered manuscripts that will considerably change all previous views of Omar and his work. One was written in 658 (a. d. 1259-60) by a scribe who lived in the city where Omar was born and who selected 172 quatrains from among Omar’s writings to copy. The other, bought in 1950 by the Cambridge University Library, was written in 604 (a. d. 1207), only 75 years after the poet’s death, and its selection of Omar’s work comprises 252 quatrains.”
