From the cover: In the early nineteenth century, when the coaching age was at its peak, and when, instead of petrol stations and advertisement hoardings, horses, coachmen, and inns had the limelight, Patterson's road map and coaching time-table was the traveller's guide, philosopher, and friend. On this map, with its mail-coach roads clearly marked, a picture resembling a giant octopus was largely seen, which had ever-twisting tentacles spread in every direction over the landscape. Today, the countryside is a mass of motorways, and as contemplation of the picturesque past is more pleasant than speculation on the future, we will return to the King's highway of the nineteenth century, to the rattle of the bars and pole-chains of the coaches, and forget for one brief hour that we have ever seen the birth of the motorway. The Romance of the Road is illustrated with 10 pages of colour and more than 100 black and white illustrations.
