Description: The author is five years old and living in Poland when her story begins in 1935. Nothing could prepare her or her family for the Russian invasion of her country and then the Nazi occupation. Her father, mother and three brothers are killed by the Germans, and another brother murdered by the Russians. Alicia is a survivor, she escapes death twice, she is imprisoned by the Russians. At sixteen she sets up an orphanage for twenty-four Jewish children and helps to smuggle Jews out of Russian-occupied territory. Here the adult Alicia tells simply and modestly her survival in war-torn Europe. A story which can not easily be forgotten.
