From the cover: “Born in 1907 and still a tireless advocate and worker for a better society in her late 90s, Majorie Porter, MBE, has an inspirational story to tell.
Marjorie grew up in a world vastly different from the one we have today. Influenced by her father’s dedication to self-improvement and her mother’s love of the arts, and despite family poverty, Marjorie became a teacher. From the 1920s to the 1990s, from student to head teacher and school governor, Marjorie has fought many battles and lived through many changes. ‘Education’ has a wider meaning for Marjorie than the classroom: she pioneered adventure playgrounds, parent participation, school journeys and the teaching of instruments in schools, and has continued to work tirelessly for the community even into her 90s.
In 1999 Marjorie was awarded the MBE for ‘services to the community and the youth of Lambeth’.”
