From the introduction: “The War Report was first broadcast in the BBC’s Home Service after the 9 o’clock news on D Day,June 6th, 1944. In the months that followed it was listened to daily by an audience of ten to fifteen million listeners in the British Isles, and in addition by a considerable audience across the Channel. It was a link between the civilian and the services, a window on the war through which the combatant and the folk at home could catch a glimpse of each other.”
