Illustrated with B&W photographs. Skipper is a small, alert, shaggy-haired Jack Russell whose tail no one remembered to dock when he was a stray. What makes him special, apart from his natural intelligence, is the orange-coloured collar and lead he wears to mark him as a Hearing Dog for the Deaf, one of the earliest trained in a new scheme to help people suffering from that totally invisible handicap: deafness. Kerena’s heart-warming story of life with Skipper is full of insights into the plight of the deaf in contemporary society, but is also funny, lively and enormously encouraging.
