First in this edition. In 1908 the Territorial Army was formed to support the regular Army. In addition, the following year, the VAD came into being, to provide additional Nurses in the event of war. The VAD, originally BRCS, was later joined by St. John and St. Andrew. A small number of VADs obtained their first experience of war in the Balkans in 1912. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, about 14,000 women in 180 detachments were serving. Amongst their duties were the escort of seriously injured, manning dressing stations, assisting doctors, cooking, and helping to man 1,400 Emergency Hospitals.
