In this collection the author has brought together the warmer and self revealing love-letters of the past, beginning which “to the husbands message", from the 10th - century miscellany "The Exeter Book", and concluding with the tender poems, to his wife, of the Welshman Alun Lewis, who was killed in the second world war. Here we have Ann Boleyn’s last letter to Henry just before execution, when the king was already writing love letters Jane Seymour; the wonderful letters of the 18th century, which range from the with of Steele to all important questions of dowry the case of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu; Charles Lamb's letters to the actress Miss Kelly, and hers to him turning him down, alongside the almost unbearable agony of Keats's To Fanny Brawne; and the letters of the present century, from the amusing epistles of George Moore to Lady Cunard to the damning correspondence if that femme fatale Edith Thompson.
